The track blends a punchy electronic beat with 80s new wave synths to create a catchy, bad-ass alternative pop song. The bridge brings back the familiar chords and guitar progression heard in the second half of “Wiped Out!,” the title track of their sophomore album. Notably, “Softcore” would regain popularity in 2022, with the track going viral on social media app TikTok.

You get me through every dark night
I'm always gone, out on the go
I'm on the run and you're home alone
I'm too consumed with my own life
Are we too young for this?
Feels like I can't move
Sharing my heart
It's tearing me apart
But I know I'd miss you, baby, if I left right now
Doing what I can, tryna be a man
And every time I kiss you, baby
I can hear the sound of breaking down
I've been confused as of late (yeah)
Watching my youth slip away (yeah)
You're like the sun, you wake me up
But you drain me out if I get too much
I might need you or I'll break
Are we too young for this?
Feels like I can't move
Sharing my heart
It's tearing me apart
But I know I'd miss you, baby, if I left right now
Doing what I can, tryna be a man
And every time I kiss you, baby
I can hear the sound of breaking down
Breaking down, breaking down, breaking down
Breaking down, breaking down, breaking down
I don't want to play this part
But I do, all for you
I don't want to make this hard
But I will 'cause I'm still
Sharing my heart
It's tearing me apart
But I know I'd miss you, baby, if I left right now (Yeah, I know I would, I know I would)
Doing what I can, tryna be a man (be your man)
And every time I kiss you, baby
I can hear the sound of breaking down
Sharing my bed, uh
Sharing my bread, yeah
Sharing my bed
Sharing my head
(I'm breaking down)
Sharing my heart
Sharing my, sharing and I'm breaking down
Sharing, I'm done
Sharing my life
The Neighbourhood's "Softcore" is a ballad about the complexity of a relationship when two people have different priorities. The song is about a man who is always busy and on-the-go while his partner stays home, but realizes that they might be too young to handle the weight of their relationship. The man shares his heart with his partner, but it's tearing him apart. Despite the challenges, he can't bring himself to leave because he knows he'll miss her if he does.
The first verse of the song highlights how his partner has been his muse and has helped him through his dark times. He admits that he's too consumed with his own life, which doesn't give him much room for his partner. In the second verse, he observes that the passing of time is causing confusion, and he's having thoughts on his priorities in life. He describes his partner as the sun which wakes him up, but sometimes drains him. He admits to breaking down every time he kisses her, illustrating how complicated their relationship has become.

The entire song sounds like a dependent toxic relationship.
“Sharing my heart” is a line that really persists in showing that they’re not only supporting themself, but also a whole other person. Juxtaposing that, lines like “you’ve been my muse for a long time” show that they can’t leave their partner either, they’re too dependent on each other to leave.
“I’m too consumed with my own life,” depicts that there is too much on their plate to continue sharing their heart; it’s ‘tearing them apart.’ But, they won’t and don't stop.
And A VERY VERY large depiction of an overly-dependent relationship are the two (2) lines:
“You’re like the sun, you wake me up but you drain me out if I get too much.” AND “I might need you or I’ll break.”
The first line shows that they’re starting to recognize that if they get too close to the sun (their partner), everything is over for them. It's essentially the acknowledgment of the dependency, but nobody is willing to break it, still. But, to the person, as long as they stay at a safe enough distance, still with that intense dependency, they can “safely” continue breaking each other. Which, there is no such thing as safety when it comes to extremely dependent relationships.
The second line adds to the previous line. They NEED their partner or they’re going to break— which is too much dependency for a normal, healthy, and kind relationship.
“Are we too young for this?” is the recognition and the confusion regarding this extremely toxic relationship. It also hints that there is no right age and that no one is old enough to endure toxic relationships. There is no such thing as 'young' or 'old enough' because not one soul deserves to go through shit.
