Phantom Lyrics

[Verse 1: Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir]
All this time wasted and all this time gone
You are still waiting on me
Everytime you leave the house, remember you're not safe
But you are hardly ever

[Verse 2: Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir]
All those times that I could swear I heard you speak
You spoke in such low voice
Of how if you could choose, you would choose not to feel
'Cause you are hardly ever happy

[Instrumental Interlude]

[Verse 3: Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir]
Sometimes I find myself standing in those steps
With eyes so blank and unsure
Realising this is not where I want to be
And not where I want to go

[Verse 4: Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir]
And I don't mean to somehow always disagree
But I feel that you do not see
In order to love, you have to be all you can be
Mostly you have to love yourself
[Instrumental Interlude]

[Verse 5: Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir & Ragnar Þórhallsson, Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir]
Oh, with all this time wasted and all this time gone
You are still waiting on me
Oh, but if I could choose, I would choose not to feel
'Cause I am hardly ever happy

[Outro: Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir]
I am hardly ever happy, mmh
Mmh
I am hardly ever happy

[Instrumental Outro]

About

Genius Annotation

“Phantom” is a song that was performed by Of Monsters and Men in 2010 when the band won the
Músíktilraunir, an annual music competition in Iceland. The track failed to make it to the tracklists of their debut album, My Head Is An Animal which was released in 2011 and internationally reissued in the following year.

In 2021, it was announced that “Phantom” would finally see the light of day in My Head Is An Animal (10th Anniversary Edition). The video teaser for the song shows the return of the collaboration between the band and WeWereMonkeys, the production company responsible for all the lyric videos (and two music videos) from My Head Is An Animal.

What did Of Monsters and Men say about "Phantom"?
Genius Answer

I wrote ‘Phantom’ when I was 16 years old in my childhood home in Garður. It was one of those songs that belonged to an era before the band but also these first few years that the band was forming and finding our sound. We never recorded it but it was always very important to our history and believe it was patiently waiting all these years. I’m so incredibly happy this song finally found a home and that we get to share it with you!

It felt really special to record it now, because it’s been a long time since it was written, but it’s always kind of been there with us. It’s always kind of followed us around, even though it didn’t get recorded and put out there. I feel really glad about it, actually, because it’s the right time right now.

What can be said about the music video?
Genius Answer

The music video for “Phantom” is constructed in a way that resembles a friendly interaction between Of Monsters and Men’s present and past.

As the song title suggests, we can see a ghost. This ghosts is coloured in the same color scheme from FEVER DREAM’s lyric videos, and is wandering around well known landscapes, explored throughout My Head Is An Animal lyric videos. Since FEVER DREAM is Of Monsters and Men’s latest album, and My Head was their first one, this could be seen as the band revisiting their past, which is supported by the fact that “Phantom” was released for the 10th anniversay edition of their debut record.

It is worthy mentioning once more that the production company responsible for the music videos for “Phantom” is WeWereMonkeys. The same company that created all lyric videos for My Head Is An Animal, as well as two music videos for the same album and another one for FEVER DREAM.
