“Butter x Dynamite” is an a cappella mashup cover of two worldwide selling singles by K-pop band BTS: “Butter” (2021) and “Dynamite” (2020). In the song, the original verses and choruses are proposed alternately, until they are overlapped in the very end, thus highlighting some similarities in their harmonic pattern. The song was released on YouTube but wasn’t made available on streaming services.
On July 31st 2021 Pentatonix posted a poll on Twitter asking their fans which song by BTS they should have covered; although “Butter” won the poll by 78%, they decided to cover them both nonetheless (or more probably they were just joking, since the video was released only seventeen days later!).
The music video furtherly mashes things up: the black and white filter during the first verse is a reference to the “Butter” video, while the pastel color palette of Pentatonix' clothes reminds of the final scene of the “Dynamite” one.
