Here’s The Meaning Behind The Weeknd’s ‘Starboy’ Title

His next album is influenced by David Bowie and Prince.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, The Weeknd revealed that the title of the album and its lead single, “Starboy,” are a nod to the classic David Bowie song “Starman.”

“Starman” is the lead single off Bowie’s seminal 1972 record The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust. The concept album tells the story of Ziggy Stardust, Bowie’s extraterrestrial messiah alter ego.

Weeknd revealed that he’s always been a big fan of Bowie who died earlier this year. “I just love Bowie, I think he’s the ultimate inventor,“ he says.

In the same interview, Weeknd mentions being influenced by Prince, the other transformational artist who also died earlier this year. Clearly Weeknd’s got some pretty big ambitions for his new album.

Starboy drops on Nov. 25 but you can read all the lyrics to the title track on Genius now.
