I got dosed by you, and
Closer than most to you, and
What am I supposed to do?
Take it away
I never had it anyway
Take it away
And everything will be okay

In you, a star is born, and
You cut a perfect form, and
Someone forever warm
Lay on, lay on, lay on, lay on
Lay on, lay on, lay on, lay on

Way up on the mountain where she died
All I ever wanted was your life
Deep inside the canyon, I can't hide
All I ever wanted was your life

Show love with no remorse, and
Climb on to your seahorse, and
This ride is right on course
This is the way I wanted it to be with you
This is the way I knew that it would be with you
Lay on, lay on, lay on, lay on
Lay on, lay on, lay on, lay on

Way up on the mountain where she died
All I ever wanted was your life
Deep inside the canyon, I can't hide
All I ever wanted was your life

I got dosed by you, and
Closer than most to you, and
What am I supposed to do?
Take it away, I never had it anyway
Take it away, and everything will be okay

Way up on the mountain where she died
All I ever wanted was your life
Deep inside the canyon, I can't hide
All I ever wanted was your life

Definately my favorite song from By The Way. This song is about losing the closest person to you and having no remorse about the death, because you spent the best times with her.

"What am I supposed to do Take it away I never had it anyway Take it away and everything will be okay "

"Show love with no remorse and Climb on to your seahorse and This ride is right on corse "

These two basically say that it was her time, that he doesn't regret anything.

Simply, one of the best songs I've ever heard, lyrically and musically.

I don't know what this song means to Anthony Kiedis (a girl? drugs?) but as I listen to it, I imagine he is singing that there was someone he wanted to get close to, but she pushed him away... "I got dosed by you/Closer than most to you" meaning that he was rejected, but was also able to get closer to her than anyone else. I don't think "Way up on the mountain where she died" necessarily implies death, but suggests that the pedestal she was on ended up being destructive. "Show love with no remorse" and the rest of that verse is his advice to her on how life should be lived. Since he never did reach her... "Take it away, I never had it anyway" is sort of self explanatory. How sad, all he ever wanted was her life (aka love). Kiedis can give me a call, I won't shut him out. :)

    My Interpretation

Basically the opening verse talks about this girl whom Anthony has a very strong attachment towards. Someone who shared his interests and was similar to him more than others were. She's captivating and her presence in his life is addictive and almost drug-like. Hence the name of the song. However, even though they appeared to have a strong chemistry. "Take it away I never had it anyway" suggests that she passed away so quickly before Anthony could even get to know her completely and establish a proper relationship. Almost like a flash.

As for the chorus, when he says 'Way upon the mountain where she died' I doubt it had anything whatsoever to do with her dying on a mountain. Sounds like a metaphor to me, perhaps what he meant was the mountain signifies the height of her addiction which ultimately killed her. And all he ever wanted was her life, to be alive and well. "Deep inside the canyon I can't hide" suggests that deep down his feelings for her are so profound that no matter what he can't hide them.

Its a beautiful song, both lyrically, melodically and in its diverse meaning. My favourite from the album!

Yeah, I think this the best song too. I was surprised no one already submitted the lyrics, so I did :) It's another song about love......... but I still like it a lot. I dunno if some of those things are the right words, tell me if you think different. And also, I got it with WinMX, but I kept getting by the way or looped versions of this song. But do not be discouraged, for I have found the right version of this song.

For a class, i once had to make an "identity web" with all the things that make me who i am, then one by one take things away until i had one thing left. My last item was the line from this song "show love with no remorse." It smeans so much more than just those words--it means do whatever you do with all of yourself, not just a part. It also reminds me of how easily you can lose what you love, so enjoy it and love it and live it while you can. Life is short, and often bitter, so use whatever you do as a way of putting a little love back into the world. Don't apologize for who you are. Show love with no remorse.

in my opinion this song is about love a man feels for a woman, its not reciprocal side of women, and talk about things that I get to do for her in consequence of her love

in my opinion, the song can be interpreted in two ways: A)a man addicted to drugs B) a man in love

I don't know why people always try to complicate everything... I took it as he was talking about a non-reciprocal love but I think as other's said here that it can be interpreted two ways, the one I said or about drug addiction.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
