If you had not have fallen
Then I would not have found you
Angel flying too close to the ground
And I patched up your broken wing and hung around a while
Trying to keep your spirits up and your fever down

I knew someday that you would fly away
For love's the greatest healer to be found
So leave me if you need to, I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground

Fly on, fly on past, the speed of sound
I'd rather see you up than see you down
So leave me if you need to, I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground.

So leave me if you need to, I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground.

Yeah I don't think this has anything to do with his son. Just flat out love :)

Here is what Poodie told me. There are a few people Will considers his very best friends that all but one go back to way before the fame and fortune. Those people include his drummer and oldest friend Paul English, Freddy Fletcher who is his sister Bobby's son, Carl Carneilus, Coach Derrell Royal, Waylon Jennings, and Randal "Poodie" Locke who died recently to name a few. Paul English wife Paula Carline was really close to Will and his wife at the time. In fact their daughter Paula was named after her. For reasons known only to God Carline died suddenly and tragically. Willie wrote the song Angle Flying Too Close To the Ground in honor and for Carline. If you listen closely to the words this the meaning to each one is now crystal clear. That is why I can't play it without a tear or two falling. Spice

This song was written way before his son, Billy committed suicide. It was actually written about his divorce with Billy's mom, Willie's first wife, Martha.

I believe this song was initially released on the Honeysuckle Rose soundtrack in 1980, his son committed suicide in 1991.

It makes more sense that Willie wrote this about a woman that he loved that eventually left him.....especially if you look at when it was written and when his son committed suicide. I think it is about an ex-wife. Great song either way.

it's obviously written about weed, just like every other song.

    My Opinion

There are many meanings / interpretations, but I like that one that I heard while in AA. ... It's a song describing one's love for another whom had an addiction (alcohol / drugs) that would likely lead to a untimely death.

    My Interpretation

He wrote Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground during his son's lifelong depression and addiction.

He likely said it was someone else because his son was alive & didn't need that publicity. After, he could say during concerts that it was for him.

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
