I wrote your name in dust on a truck
As it rolled out of town
Just in case my love for you
Might be found
I cried my tears in a mountain stream
They'll sting you one day
I called your name in a giant cave
It echoes to this day

So sister, you're hearing how I miss her
But I don't think that she's hearing my calls
So sister, you're hearing how I miss her
But I don't think that she's hearing my calls
No, I don't think that I'm helping my cause

I wrote our names on a subway wall
Just in case you called
I rent a room and it's just for two
But where are you?

So sister, you're hearing how I miss her
But I don't think that she's hearing my calls
So sister, you're hearing how I miss her
But I don't think that she's helping my cause
No I don't think that I'm helping my cause
No I don't think that I'm helping my cause
No I don't think that I'm helping my cause

So sister, you're hearing how I miss her
But I don't think that she's hearing my calls
So sister, I need to be with her
But I don't think that she's hearing my calls
No, I don't think that I'm helping my cause
No, I don't think that I'm helping my cause

I can't believe no one has commented on this song. It is without question my favorite by the Verve. The meaning I think is pretty clear but it is such a powerful song about an intense longing to be with someone who has left you. One of the saddest songs I've ever heard.

As someone who feels that music is the only thing that keeps me going, I put this song on a mixed cd I gave to a woman I saw for a very short time. I don't think I need to explain why.

    My Opinion

Such an amazing song and the honesty in these lyrics just make it outstanding..

This song in my eyes is about loving a woman so fucking much and then having her leave.. You feel so lost and desperate that you become addicted to the idea of getting her back even though you know that you know how impossible that is.

She's in your mind when you wake up,she's in your mind when you fall asleep. She's in your mind while doing whatever so you say I'll swallow my ego and I'll try to approach her but it's just no use for her since she has made up her mind and she will turn you down all the time..

I love the line where he says he wrote her name on the dusk of a car that was leaving out of town. It's like a modern interpretation of writing a letter, putting it in a bottle and then throwing it in the sea.

So much pain inside two verses. I've lived this song letter to letter.

    This is poetry my friends.

"I wrote your name in dust on a truck As it rolled out of town Just in case my love for you might be found" I love this lyric and especially the sentiment behind it. I just had a conversation that reminded me of this song, about that time in love where you love so much you want the whole world to know it. And you do these things full of incredible longing - I suppose because you know ultimately that the kind of happiness you have will never last that way forever.

While I don't think it is the saddest song I've heard, I do agree with your assessment, thisismusic. This is by far my favourite song by the Verve, although Ashcroft has one of those immensely powerful voices that he makes the choice a difficult one. And WHY are so few people commenting on it?

This one though I could connect to from the first listen. It's also sad that it is so hard to find.

    Memory

I remember when I first heard this song, I had a girlfriend at the time and i was very happy but it still struck a chord with me.15 years later and I'm hearing this song again and it REALLY strikes a chord, completely in love with someone and too many barriers in the way and I don't know if I'll ever get to be with her and yet she's my best friend at the same time, really so much like a sister.

    My Interpretation

i think this song about a girl you love so much, but she actually no longer loves you, and of course she is out of reach, so he vent to his sister, saying how much he miss his lover, and (well this is very personal) i think in some way he is trying to tell his sister he would rather be with his loved one instead of with her
