So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Take it back from the top
Everybody look at me, me (oh)
I walk in the door you start screaming (oh)
Come on everybody, what you here for? (Oh)
Move your body around like a nympho (oh)
Everybody get your neck to crack around (oh)
All you crazy people come on jump around (oh)
I wanna see you all on your knees knees (oh)
You either wanna be with me or be me
Come on now
Man-eater, make you work hard, make you spend hard
Make you want all of her love
She's a man-eater, make you buy cars, make you cut cards
Make you fall real hard in love
She's a man-eater, make you work hard, make you spend hard
Make you want all of her love
She's a man-eater, make you buy cars, make you cut cards
Wish you never ever met her at all
And when she walks she walks with passion (oh)
When she talks, she talks like she can handle it (oh)
When she asks for something, boy, she means it (oh)
Even if you never ever see it (oh)
Everybody get your neck to crack around (oh)
All you crazy people come on jump around (oh)
You doing anything to keep her by your side (oh)
Because she says she love you, love you long time (oh)
Come on now
Man-eater, make you work hard, make you spend hard
Make you want all of her love
She's a man-eater, make you buy cars, make you cut cards
Make you fall real hard in love
She's a man-eater, make you work hard, make you spend hard
Make you want all of her love
She's a man-eater, make you buy cars, make you cut cards
Wish you never ever met her at all (oh)
Ahh (oh)
Ahh (oh)
Ahh (oh)
Ahh (yeah), come on now
Man-eater, make you work hard, make you spend hard

I don't understand why people think the messages behind Nelly Furtado's songs have suddenly vanished...
Just look at the lyrics and listen to the tone of the song, she isnt playing this maneater person in a good light. The song, to me, sends a message that the type of person that this maneater is, isnt a good one and isnt someone you should try to be like. This is an image that is being portrayed alot in todays world.
I think this and Promiscuous have clear messages, why am I the only one that seems to be seeing them?
I still like Hall and Oates version better. :-D This song like Promiscuous isnt really the Nelly style that Ive coming to really like. I hope the whole album isnt like this. If it is, I guess its just another stage of nelly.
This song is really cool, but I wouldn't say it's better than anything Gwen has put out. So what if Nelly has a "new" style; it's really fun and is another step in her creative life. The album will please new and old fans because it brings a new sound while maintaining her folkish styling.
WoW. Am I the only one who loves this song! It's obviously about a woman who can and does get attention from men when she goes out to the clubs. It happens at all clubs everywhere. This particular woman (her, not I) gets guys to buy her "stuff" and lose their dignity as well as their wallets. She has them wrapped around her finger. By the time they realize she's just used them for what they could give her, she's gone. This song was my first intoduction to Nelly. Love it.
I really like this song. It's very much different from the folk-pop I've become used to hearing from Nelly Furtado. It's an interesting change, though unusual, it works. The song is clearly about a woman who just wants to be with men who will give her what she wants, a "pimpette" if you will. It's catchy as heck too, which is always a good thing.
she teamed up with Neptunes to make the album and here's the consequence - a "sexy-shaky-groovy" song what is really not Nelly's style. However, it's cathy so it may be a hit soon. But I dont think that this sexy baby image suits Nelly......
It's a bit different to her other stuff but I like it all the same.
Oh and it's not a cover of the Hall and Oats song so you can't really compare it just beacuse it's just got the same title!!!
This is one top tune, reminds me off my best mate! She's your typical maneater- makes you work hard and makes you spend harder!!!
I like this song, but it
s kinda sad that now she
s lost her particular style..I wasnt being serious about Hall and Oates (but I do like their song).
I agree kaneda, she still had her style, very unique and fresh but the messages behind the songs are gone...
