Chase your dreams away
Glass needles in the hay
The sun forgives the clouds
You are my holy shroud (mhm)

I just don't care if it's real
That won't change how it feels
I just don't care if it's real
That won't change how it feels

No, it doesn't change
And you can't resist
Making me feel eternally missed
And you can't resist
And you can't resist
Making me feel

Chase your dreams away
Glass needles in the hay
The sun forgives the clouds
You are my holy shroud

I just don't care if it's real
That won't change how it feels
I just don't care if it's real
That won't change how it feels

No, it doesn't change
And you can't resist
Making me feel eternally missed
You can't resist
You can't resist
Making me feel

(Mhm)
(Mhm)

You can't resist
Making me feel eternally missed
You can't resist
You can't resist
Making me feel
And you can't resist
Making me feel eternally missed
And you can't resist
And you can't resist
Making me feel

(Chase your dreams away)
(Glass needles in the hay)
(The sun forgives the clouds)
(You are my holy shroud)

    Song Meaning

Wow my interpretation of this song is so much different from everyone else.

I don't think this song has anything to do with love in relationships, or a girl, in fact I think this song has to do with God, maybe addressing people in his life trying to convert him into Christianity.

Chase your dreams away - Chasing away the things you loved to do, the things that are considered "sin", or chasing away the life of "sin"

Glass needles in the hay - Think about glass, it's transparent, and if you were to make needles from it and toss it into hay you'd never find it. I think this lyric is talking about trading in your dreams and desires for faith. Something you can't see, something you're constantly searching for but you just know is there. Christianity is the faith based religion.

The sun forgives the clouds - A reference to Jesus, the holy Son, forgiving the sins of His people

You are my holy shroud - This indicates to me that it's probably someone close in his life who wants to save him, probably a family member.

I just don't care if it's real That won't change how it feels - Addressing the matter, he's saying he doesn't care if all of what this person is telling him is the truth. He still wants to be who he is and do what he wants despite any possible consequences

And you can't resist Making me feel eternally missed You can't resist You can't resist Making me feel - He's saying that despite his rejections to that life this person still continues to try and convince him. The lyric "Eternally Missed" in particular stand out. It's a reference to Eternity, heaven, the afterlife, and how this person tries to to sell the life to him by telling him that heaven wants his soul (as in heaven will miss him if he doesn't jump on board)

So yeah, I totally disagree that this song has anything to do with a female breaking his hear or lying or anything like that. I think it better fits into this interpretation, but who can know for sure?

Well since it's off the hysteria single, I can't help associating it with that song - about wanting something so bad it tears you to pieces and drives you mad.

I have no idea if this is correct, but when I heard this song I immediately thought of the idea of loving someone so much, but they're utterly unreachable. Like a celebrity, someone famous, or just someone way out of your league, or something more serious than that. They can't resist being so alluring, that's just how they are. And the person in love is so delusion, they don't care if it's real, they just love the way they feel about this unattainable person.

and the verse about chasing your dreams away totally fits - that's the delusional person's rational self trying to get some sense. the chasing could refer to realizing that they can never have that person, yet they still blindly search for a connection or love - like glass needles in the hay, they're just utterly screwed. It's never gonna happen. But they forgive this amazing person...even for overshadowing them, making them feel like nothing - because they are their "holy shroud," their goal for perfection.

I fucking love this song.... Also the extra sounds, like winding/musical toys, in the beginning and end - makes me associate the whole song with a dreamlike, delusional, naive state.

I love this song..but I'm sure what it means. I'm surprised more people haven't commented on it. This is what I think~

He's involved with a girl and she wants to be with him, but something's keeping her from it and the only way they can be together is in secret. "The sun forgives the clouds" he understands her position from this line, the clouds cover he sun inevitably, it either has to be like this or not at all. "Glass needles in the hay" refer to how invisible their true relationship to everyone around them is, or something like that~ "Chase your dreams away," her dream is to be with him but she can't, thus her dream is chased away. It isn't "real" in a sense, but he's ok with that, and she's his "holy shroud," something "holy" or beautiful in a way, but "shroud" as in concealed. He doesn't care if it has to be kept a secret, it still feels great to him because he loves her..

After trying to analyze this song it sounds a lot like an affair to me. Maybe 'eternally missed' refers to when the relationship has to end and what they had was so special neither of them will ever forget about it~ thus the relationship being eternally missed.

    My Interpretation

I don't think is has anything to do with love for a girl, nor with God. maybe it's about someone (possibly a friend) who has a really bad influence on him, and he can't escape from that this friend trying to convince him to do something that he otherwise wouldn't do, something that will eventually kill him ("eternally missed"?) ...just a crazy thought that came to my head..

anyway whatever matt was thinking when he wrote it, I must say that I just love the song so much...I wish they had more songs like this one, so powerfull and passionate

My first thought is about a someone likeing another person who doesnt notice him (makeing him missed, fail to being noticed) and that he is in his own world thinking and dreaming about this person he loves

Second i thought about someone being dead, like an old grandma and her husband dies (And you can't resist Making me feel eternally missed) and this grandma talks to him in some sorta way and it may not be real but she doesnt care

I just dont care if its real!

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

The Night We Met

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
