Well, in my opinion this song is about being a young & maybe a little naive &/or introverted girl and finding yourself loving a man who is at first very charming, carefree & outgoing, and seems at first to be without limits, as in
"There was a time
you opened up every doorway
you didn't mind if everything
wasn't your way"
then that man starts to gradually become more introverted & shows their more possessive/obsessive side to you as the relationship progresses, even while they keep up the appearance of being carefree & outgoing to everyone else,
"Don't pull away
that goes against what you told me
I look in your eyes
I realize what you've sold me
is love in a vacuum"
so you confront them about the way they're acting and of course they deny it,
"I think you've changed
but you insist that
that's not true"
quite possibly they are an addict of some sort, my guess would be cocaine, &/or showing very obsessive behavior towards you (early on in the video for this song we see the man hanging a picture up, it is a very large portrait of Aimee & it is prominently displayed in his/their apartment for the duration of the song), thus their "love in a vacuum",
"You look so strange, so distant
that you're hardly you
Now I can see
how you have been acting different
You say it's me
but I know
that it isn't
it's love in a vacuum"
but still you are in love with them and don't want to leave them and you know that they are truly in love with you and they don't want you to leave them either, maybe they are convinced you can save them from themself, maybe they are so broken that the possibility of an overdose &/or suicide attempt is very real and you want to get through to them that their behavior not only dangerous but it is also just pissing you off and if they don't wise up they run the risk of loosing you, as in the lines
"You will be lonely
if you leave me alone", so you want to save them but can't get through to them due to the addiction &/or emotional problems they have,
"Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
love in a vacuum
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
You will be lonely
if you leave me alone
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough"
you want them to understand that the love they are giving you is not enough when it is filtered through the vacuum of their drug addiction &/or emotional impairment,
"You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough
and just wait
you will be lonely
Love in a vacuum
Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
Love in a vacuum".
'Love In A Vacuum' for me is a hauntingly truthful acute argument on the loneliness of obsession and almost inevitable loss of love that follows people who are broken in some way or another; the obsessives, the coke heads, the drunks, addicts or the just-plain-old emotionally broken; a razor sharp, lyrically driven, deceptively poppy, yet ultimately-depressing-in-the-best-way song.
Quintessential Aimee Mann.
Goddamn this dusty room
This hazy afternoon
I'm breathing in this silence
Like never before
This feelin' that I get
This one last cigarette
As I lay awake
And wait for you to come through the door
Oh maybe, maybe, maybe
I can share it with you
I behave, I behave, I behave
So I can share it with you
You were not alone
Dear loneliness
You forgot
But I remember this
Oh stranger, stranger
Stranger things have happened, I know
I am not alone
Dear loneliness
I forgot
That I remember this
Oh stranger, stranger
Stranger things have happened, I know
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
We'll dream about somewhere
Our smoke will fill the air
As I lay awake and wait
For you to walk out that door
I can change, I can change, I can change
But who do you want me to be?
I'm the same, I'm the same, I'm the same
Oh, do you want me to be?
You were not alone
Dear loneliness
You forgot
But I remember this
Oh, stranger, stranger
Stranger things have happened, I know
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
I'm not alone
Dear loneliness
I forgot
That I remember this
You were not alone
Dear loneliness
You forgot
But I remember this
Oh, stranger, stranger

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Son Şansın - Şarkı Sözleri
Hayalperest
Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
Amazing but super sad song! It's about when your someone gets tired of you or the situation or something. They can't even describe why, but you know as well as they do that they are bored and have let the relationship go sour in their mind... past the point of no return. "Goddam this dusty room" - Things are getting old. "this hazy afternoon" – How you feel about the relationship is getting confusing. "breathing in this silence" - it's getting obvious that things are no longer as exciting as in the beginning and there's not much left to say.
He wonders if he should wait to share experiences (maybe sex) til she comes through the door or just take care of it himself now before she comes home. Maybe that aspect of the relationship is getting boring as well, yet he “behaves” so he can share it with her.
"You'll dream about somewhere A smoke will fill the air As I lay awake and wait For you to walk out that door" ...he's restlessly waiting for her disinterest in the relationship to be overcome by temptation, and he knows she will soon leave him and he will watch as she goes elsewhere for excitement.
Then, he talks about the conflict between how she wants him to constantly change and keep things exciting. Routines get boring. However, she also wants him to never change, always be there for her, and be a source of stability. Both cannot be accomplished simultaneously and neither alone will satisfy. This is torture for a guy who truly cares about a girl.
I am HOPING that the rest of you are right about the remaining lyrics being about hope. Or maybe it’s just a reminder that this is not that big of a deal. Loneliness tells you to feel bad, but then you remember that it’s not something to worry about because it happens all the time and everybody’s been there. Your existence does not depend on that of others, and it’s not the worst thing in the world to lose someone.
Well, the beauty of poetry and its various interpretations. I find the meaning as a mix of the posts I have seen.

My take on it is that he is talking about a relationship where the singer is still sharing the same dwelling with his ex-partner, while the partner is living her own life, knowing that she will leave (As I lay awake and wait for you to walk out that door) and do her thing, but will return (And wait for you to come through the door).

Loneliness is the third party involved because when the partner isn't there, it is silent and this increases the singer's feeling of loneliness. When the partner is there, the partner does not seem to not know what he/she wants from the singer (to be the same or to change).
@loggfather wow! You’re dead ass accurate on this one my friend ???? thanks for sharing this

I think that this song is about wanting someone that you once had, but cant have anymore. If you’ve been in a situation like this you know what I’m talking about. The guy in the song spends the day by just sitting their wishing that the person he has been thinking about all day would change their mind and come back to him. The music in the song (mostly the guitar) gives off a somber type tone, which indicates some sort of regret. Yet despite all this, the song is slightly up beat, which shows that he still has hope that he would change if she gave him a second chance, and that Stranger Things Have Happened than a girl coming back to a person.
am i the only one who gets the feeling of this song being about someones partner being unfaithful?
"Goddamn this dusty room This hazy afternoon I'm breathing in this silence Like never before
This feeling that I get This one last cigarette As I lay awake And wait for you to come through the door" He is waiting for her to come home, quite sure of that she hasn't really "been out with her girlfriends", or whatever she might have told him.
"You'll dream about somewhere A smoke will fill the air As I lay awake and wait For you to walk out that door" He gets his suspicious thoughts about her cheating on him confirmed and just wants to be alone for a while
"I can change I can change I can change But who do you want me to be? I'm the same I'm the same I'm the same What do you want me to be?" He clearly puts the blame on himself and think that he has bored her or something, and he wants to do what he thinks has been wrong right, to get her to come back to him.
by the way, sorry for my bad english .__.
This is one of the best songs I've ever ever heard. My sister showed it to me a while ago and I was stunned by it.
I think it's about losing someone and NEEDING that person back. Asking "what do you want me to be in order to have you back??" I love how he emphasizes "i'm the same, i'm the same, i'm the same" in such a desperate way. Love it!
It's such a sad song, but I love it with a passion. You can never get tired of it. And I love playing that riff with my guitar :)
And yeah, it's "dear loneliness", not "lonely miss"
I absolutely love the this: This feeling that I get This one last cigarette As I lay awake And wait for you to come through the door
sigh
Well, while we are talking about tributes to other songs, I am pretty certain the "I can change, I can change, I can change" part and the lines following it pay homage to Verve's Bittersweet Symphony.
My real father left when i was about 5 or 6 and my mother hates him. The 1st stanza reminds me of the appartment me and my mom lived, where my dad left my mom. The 2nd stanza is when memories of my father leaving started kicking in and i realized how much i wanted him. The 3rd stanza is really how much i wanted to get to sit down after a decade and get to know and meet my dad. And the chorus "You were not alone dear loneliness...Oh,Oh." is when i tried to convince him that he was never really alone because i had been in this apartment waiting for him forever. "You'll dream about somewhere. Asmoke will fill the air." is my father dreaming about somewhere better he could be instead of with me. "As I lay awake and wait for you to walk out the door." because i knew he always would. "I can change" I blamed his absence on myself. "I can Change" My mom blamed herself for his AWOL attitude, crying for days and days and days on end for something she couldn't prevent. "I can change" I said to myself and wondered why I need to be the one changing. I watched my mom cry for too long for me to even express and realized why she hates him today and I figured the chorus of this song would be the only thing worth telling him one day.
"You were not alone Dear loneliness" he was the only one that was ever good enough for him.
"You forgot But I remember this" My mother
"Oh stranger stranger Stranger things have happened, I know" He is a complete stranger to me and I know what he has not been around to acknowledge.
"I'm not alone Dear loneliness" I always had someone who cared, My mother.
"I forgot That I remember this" I forgot why my mom hated him so much. I forgot that she was always there for me. I forgot that he would not change for his own blood...but I remember this.
"Oh stranger stranger Stranger things have happened" I know" I would tell the complete stranger and anyone else who is awed at the thought of a "Father/Stranger" who would walk out on his family...Stranger things have Happened.
Isn't it cool when you can connect to a song like that?
Best song on the album. Love the metronome.
This song is amazing. Obviously about a relationship. Not sure what it's about beyond that...
Fantasic Song! Sounds like Disc 2 of IYH.
It's about hope... Great!
