I'm up in the woods, I'm down on my mind
I'm building a sill to slow down the time
I'm up in the woods, I'm down on my mind
I'm building a sill to slow down the time
I'm up in the woods, I'm down on my mind
I'm building a sill to slow down the time
I'm up in the woods, I'm down on my mind

In my family, we are lucky enough to live directly infront of a stretch of woods, which out patio leads straight into. I remember, one morning, when I was awake at about 6:00 am (couldn't sleep, just split with my girlfriend). The house was totally empty. I'd opened all of the blinds downstairs, and white, autumn morning sunlight flooded in. Everything was completely still, until a hummingbird just hovered infron of the window for around about a minute. It sang and seemed to be comforting me. When it flew away, I walked out into the wood, bare feet, to try and find it again. And then suddenly it hit me. The beauty all around us everyday. I just lay outside on the bark and moss, with the sparks of light from the gaps between the leaves. I lay there for around two hours, and it was absoloutely breathtaking. At that point a royal mail man turned up and probably thought I was crazy haha. But I tried to recreate the morning every day that next week, but I could never quite capture the stillness, and the beauty of doing nothing, in a place where the only sound was birds, and there was no wind, and nothing to indicate anything at all was happening, other than just living. And that, is what this song is about.
Fucking beautiful.
dude sick me too. i actually hate nature and i think song is stupid bc he just says wooods and stuff over but you know i guess<br />
repeat eleven times
i always admire artists who can say enough with one paragraph. excellent song...feels very Imogen Heap-ish.
Exactly! I knew it wasn't just me :) big ol' Imogen Heap fan.
this song is redone on the Volcano Choir album. it's called "Still" and I think it's actually better than this original version.
@sammy142 Thanks from 12 years in the future. The original is good as part of the EP, but this Volcano Choir feels more like the rest of the songs on Blood Bank and works better on its own.
heard this on kanye west new album and i was sure it was im lost in this world im down on my mind. very disappointed to realize i was wrong. being lost in this world really clicked with me when i heard cuz i feel totally lost in this world right now....
In the kanye west version caledd 'Lost In The World', I t does say I'm lost in The World, I'm down on my life. But that is a different song, and he has autotuned it and corrected it to say that. This is the original. They are both fantastic songs, about very different feelings, but barely different melodies and lyrics. I love almost all forms of music. And Bon Iver and Kanye are two of my favourite artists.
It seems about taking the time to really appreciate what your life is about and what you have.
Everytime I listen to it, it feels like a drug trip. 19 words and a vocoder. Very pretty.
an excellent play on words where two of the meanings of the word "still" fit.
"still" as in alcohol distillation goes along with being "down on my mind" and "slow down time" (the ataxic effects)
"while still" "a period of calm or silence" also fits with being alone in the woods.
lyrically and musically beautiful.
To touch on what robbnthahood said. I think the "still" plays an integral part in the song, because when you make moonshine you use the "still" for distilling all the impurities out of the alcohol. First off its illegal to make moonshine, and it's typically done in the back "woods" as to not be discovered or tampered with. I also think it plays into the "slow down the time," because it is a lengthy process that can take weeks. With that said I still believe it's metaphorical for Justin Vernon actual trip to the mountains to find himself. So in short lol, he's in the woods to find himself, and extricate all the impurities in his life so that he can find what makes him pure, genuine, and beautiful; which could takes weeks or months. Just like making moonshine. Either way, it's amazing.
This song meaning is so obvious to me! He's lost and feeling down, so he's getting drunk, to slow down the time. And that's all there is to it. :)
this song takes my breath away, really. it's so beautiful.
I am a dancer and I have been looking for accapella songs to do my senior solo to.So when I heard this song...it touched me on a more personal note. I began to realized that I was going way too much and I wasn't able to enjoy the beauty of life (like the woods). It made me realize that I needed to just sit still and reflect and slooooooow down! Love this Guy! GENIUS :)
