Deadlines And Commitments

I read in an article that this song is about economic hardship and that the entire album is more realistic than their other work. I think this is pretty valid, the other day I was really sad and couldn't find a Killers song that really related to how I felt. Sometimes they can be overly optimistic. This song is a bit darker which was refreshing in a way.

He's offering support for someone he loves or someone he use to be in love with. He's saying that the times are rough and that no matter they can also come back and rely on him. In the literal sense, he's talking about a girl (daughter? lover? irrelevant.) moving back in with him.

In the figurative sense, he's saying that he understands if she finds another lover "If you should find romance/Go on and take that chance" that he doesn't want her to hold herself back.

"Before the strategies begin/Every morning, in the evening They can suck you in/Boy don't I know it..." He's saying that she should enjoy the new relationship and everything that comes with that. He is also warning her that once the romance is dead, it can become suffocating, it can "suck" you in. He's saying that he can also rely on her, no strings attached. No "deadlines or commitments", he just loves her and wants what's best.

Fucking brilliant song.

This is a song about the global economic crisis. Flowers wrote the track after being prompted by comedian Jimmy Carr, who told the singer "the next big breakthrough record" was going to be "about the problems of the economy".

"Las Vegas was hit harder than any other place," Flowers said. "In my street there were eight or nine empty houses. There's an empty shopping mall near my house, this brand new complex, and nobody ever occupied it. It's a weird wasteland-looking thing. Dead palm trees. I guess that's where that song was born."

Where Springsteen or Dylan would rail at the injustices done to the working man, Flowers, in line with his religion, takes a more compassionate view, singing: "Don't be afraid to knock on the door if you fall on hard times."

Hrmm, interesting getting the official meaning....When I first listened to this song I swore it was about an open relationship. Someone offering to be a refuge of support. selflessly. Succor and understanding seemed to be the underlying current to me, and the song is being sung to someone panicking under the noose of commitment perhaps marriage.

I am inching closer to my thirties, and have had many bouts with anxiety, the idea of running out of time, or not doing what I should be doing. (whatever that is) can be very crushing. The lyrics of this song in that context has been a real salve to me. Music can be very healing.

I think it should be "I'll catch you darlin', I'll be waiting, I am on your side"

He goes on to sing "Don't be afraid to knock on the door" which signals that their agreement will still be valid, not that it "won't". It's also clearer the second time he sings it in the song.

I just got the album Battle born, love it and this song is my favourite!!!!

I feel pretty sure that Brandon is speaking to his children in this. He's encouraging them to grow up and find their own future, but at the same time he's reassuring them that if they ever need to escape or they need a safe place to come home to, that he's always there no matter what.

This song is an "homage to" or a rip off 70's rock songs. The very title is a famous line from Bob Segers "Against the Wind".

The line "simple twist of fate" is the title of a song from Bob Dylan's blood on the tracks record. The line "If you should find romance go one and take that chance" is a nod to Steve Winwood's "While You see a Chance". "All you've got to do is call" is James Taylor's "You've got a Friend".

You have to have religious background to understand Brandon's heart. Brandon, like myself, was brought up in the church, with a curious heart to see the world- there are struggles in religion to stay in the straight line- this song and be still are in the same realm of passing wisdom to your children as well as to anyone going through struggles in life.
