So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
He said, "Let's get out of this town
Drive out of the city away from the crowds"
I thought, "Heaven can't help me now"
Nothin' lasts forever
But this is gonna take me down
He's so tall and handsome as hell
He's so bad but he does it so well
I can see the end as it begins
My one condition is
Say you'll remember me
Standin' in a nice dress
Starin' at the sunset, babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks
Say you'll see me again
Even if it's just in your
Wildest dreams, ah, ha
Wildest dreams, ah, ha
I said, "No one has to know what we do"
His hands are in my hair, his clothes are in my room
And his voice is a familiar sound
Nothin' lasts forever
But this is gettin' good now
He's so tall and handsome as hell
He's so bad but he does it so well
And when we've had our very last kiss
But my last request is
Say you'll remember me
Standin' in a nice dress
Starin' at the sunset babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks
Say you'll see me again
Even if it's just in your
Wildest dreams, ah, ha (ha, ha)
Wildest dreams, ah, ha
You'll see me in hindsight
Tangled up with you all night
Burnin' it down
Someday, when you leave me
I bet these memories
Follow you around
You'll see me in hindsight
Tangled up with you all night
Burnin' (burnin'), it (it), down (down)
Someday, when you leave me
I bet these memories
Follow (follow), you (you), around
(Follow you around)
Say you'll remember me
Standing in a nice dress

Red lips and rosy cheeks
Say you'll see me again

She's basically singing about how she wants to be with this person but wants him to have fond memories of her that go beyond the physical attraction.
This song describes how Taylor wants to be more than a one-night stand to this guy, she will sleep with him but only if he promises that he won't abandon her afterwards. The strong Lana Del Rey influence can be felt in this song and I love every second of it.
Track 9 on 1989 is about Swift hoping her lover will remember their best moments after they’re over. It expresses mixed feelings: hoping that they last, but knowing that they’ll end. “
Surprisingly, the famous figure who gets the most elaborate attention is Lana Del Rey: Swift flat-out mimics her on “Wildest Dreams,” flitting between a fluttery soprano and deadpan alto, flipping lyrics so Lana — “His hands are in my hair, his clothes are in my room” — that it’s hard to tell if the song is homage or parody. –Billboard Magazine
It’s hard to imagine that this song, which finds Swift quivering and whispering and reinventing herself as a sort of summer-dress-wearing femme fatale, wasn’t inspired by Lana Del Rey. The sultry lyrics describe a surreptitious, doomed affair that the singer enters under only one condition: “Say you’ll see me again,” she sings, “even if it’s just in your wildest dreams.” Swift’s own distinct songwriting voice gets a little lost, but she does a convincing Del Rey impression.
Wildest Dreams": Taylor Swift's surely extensive dress collection makes another curtsy in this image-conscious rom-com, with lots of production color and bass like a heart beat. It sounds like an Instagram that's been toyed with too much, but the "tangled up with you all night" line? Yum, give this a hard house remix, stat. Grade: B
I think this song is referring to a sexual experience with some one, and you can see that in the lines "tangled up with you all night", he's so bad but he does it so well",and "his clothes in my room".
It definitely IS inspired by Lana Del Rey, you don't have to be a genius to notice that the obvious music of the chorus is just like Lana's "Without You". It's been personalized perfectly anyhow, lyrics are worth listening to -unlike most other tracks of 1989- and I guess it doesn't really matter if it's inspired by another artist... Taylor's recently been trying pop and let's hope she'll get better and find her genuine style of pop... Anyway I say it again, I liked the lyrics and I liked how she's made her own version of a Del Rey's method.
My opinion is that she is saying they are In love but people don't approve and they both know that they will have to say goodbye and she wants him to remember her in her most wonderful dress and that he will never forget her as long as he imagines her looking beautiful.
The song is basically about a young lady who falls very hard for a fine, hansome gentleman whereby it happens that he's hardcore and bad and ends up breaking her heart. This is seen in the line 'Nothing lasts forever'...Now all she could ever ask of him is to say he'll remember her even if it's just in his dreams
This song immediately consumes you. It makes you feel like there's something you're waiting for but you're not quite sure of what... for me it makes me think of a girl who is more in love with him-whoever that may be- than she ever could've fathomed but their time will inevitably come to a close but she hopes he won't ever forget their times together. Every moment is one she holds dearly and cherishes. She doesn't know what will happen but the thought of lingering in her subconscious (dreams) is more than enough since the universe is taking separating them.
