"So, what would you little maniacs like to do first?"

Watching through my fingers
Watching through my fingers

Shuts my eyes and count to ten
It goes in one ear out the other, oh
One ear out the other, oh
Burning bright right 'til the end
Now you'll be missing from the photographs
Missing from the photographs

Watching through my fingers
Watching through my fingers

In my thoughts you're far away
And you are whistling a melody
Whistling a melody
Crystallizing clear as day
Oh, I can picture you so easily
Picture you so easily

What's gonna be left of the world if you're not in it?
What's gonna be left of the world? Oh

Every minute and every hour
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more
Every stumble and each misfire
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more

Watching through my fingers
Watching through my fingers

Caught off guard by your favorite song
I'll be dancing at a funeral
Dancing at a funeral
Sleeping in the clothes you love
It's such a shame we have to see them burn
Shame we have to see them burn

What's gonna be left of the world if you're not in it?
What's gonna be left of the world? Oh

Every minute and every hour
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more
Every stumble and each misfire
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more

"If you want to be a party animal, you have to learn to live in the jungle
Now stop worrying and go get dressed"

You might have to excuse me
I've lost control of all of my senses
And you might have to excuse me
I've lost control of all of my words
So get drunk, call me a fool
Put me in my place, put me in my place
Pick me up, up off the floor
Put me in my place, put me in my place

Every minute and every hour
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more
Every stumble and each misfire
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more

Watching through my fingers
Watching through my fingers

'Cause every minute and every hour
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more

After reading the lyrics to this song I have to say I believe its a song about grief in any form whether it be a loss/death of a loved one/friend or a loss of a relationship. I can't seem to understand what the first line and couple other lines are referring to that states "So, what would you little maniacs like to do first?" "If you want to be a party animal, you have to learn to live in the jungle Now stop worrying and go get dressed" however, I feel like it has a funky vibe of a childhood show so maybe this song in reference to losing someone you have known since childhood. I also feel these lines also could be phrases said by this particular person the song is about or these phrases were said by someone who was apart of the memory that involved this particular person. the lead singer also has childhood references in the chorus such as "watching through our fingers" what I believe this line is trying to refer to is when your a child and you are watching a scene in a movie or watching something your parents tell you to cover your eyes to and you are just a little curious as to what you are missing so you peak through your fingers, I believe it's literal and in reference to a childhood memory spent with this person the song is written for. (not sure if anyone took that line as a literal meaning) its very relatable for any child. I remember my parents telling me to cover my eyes while watching the love scene in titanic and peaking through my fingers. The rest of the song is pretty obvious he is referring the loss of a special person meaning death or just in general losing a relationship. What’s gonna be left of the world if you’re not in it? What’s gonna be left of the world, oh. this doesnt have to mean this person physically left this world but by some means they left his world, meaning they are no longer around in one way or another. It’s such a shame we had to see them burn, shame we had to see them burn.." This could mean a literal burn of clothes as in cremation via death or it could mean burn as in they are no longer around.
Shut my eyes and count to ten It goes in one ear out the other, one ear out the other Burning bright right till the end "Now you’ll be missing from the photographs, missing from the photographs":. These few lines means they were very close burning bright right to the end of this relationship and by stating it goes in one ear out the other and counting to ten he cant come to terms with the loss nor does he want to. He's in denial and cant seem to process it, this is another stage of the grieving process.
In my thoughts you’re far away And you are whistling the melody, whistling the melody Crystallizing clear as day Oh, I can picture you so easily, picture you so easily " This is also part of the shock which is a stage of grief because it seems like it was just yesterday this person was around and things were happy. ou might have to excuse me I’ve lost control of all my senses And you might have to excuse me I’ve lost control of all my words So get drunk, call me a fool Put me in my place, put me in my place Pick me up, up off the floor " Obviously these lines are quite self explanatory and this is one of the final stages of grief where you are past the denial and shock stage and come to terms with the fact that this person really is no longer here. Hes describing that he is having a hard time and you'll have to understand he cant deal at the moment normally with what has just happened.

Wow this song speaks to all of the different deaths and loss of relationships I've had and manages to still have a funky catchy beat to the point of where you maybe would not recognize it was a song about grieving. Its sort of similar to the song by the Bleachers "get better"

    My Interpretation

At first I thought it was about a soldier who lost a companion, because of "misfire" and "watching through my fingers" (eg. hiding in trenches?). Also the line "Sleeping in the clothes you love - it’s such a shame we had to see them burn" seemed like maybe someone died in a fire (bomb, perhaps) however, it seems more realistically to be about cremation. Amazing song.

I think it's about losing someone who is very dear to you, like a family member. Some sentences are very strange, but I think it reflects the different kind of relationships you can have with family members like grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters. Lyrics like 'put my in my place', 'dancing at a funeral (I hope the person died of very old age and death is the relief), 'watching through my fingers' and 'every stumble and each misfire' reflect the mixed emotions one could feel in different relations and in losing someone you love.

    My Interpretation

As the song title says, I think this song is about the process of grief. whether that may be losing someone because of death, heartbreak or just the separation of two people.

the lyrics "every minute and every hour, I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more" means exactly as it says. the griever cannot stop thinking about this person they've lost. it indescribably consumes them. The grieving process is very confusing and hard to understand because everyone grieves differently. This is shown in the music video. The video depicts the confusing and complicated feeling and explains that its not something we can understand.

This song is meant to bring a sense of reality. most of the world has experienced a loss in some way. This song is a symbol of that exact feeling of loss and the grief that comes with. bastille are so talented and this song truly does describe the hard description of loss, grief and damage.

So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new. This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus. Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness". The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1. All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy. And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns) There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
