Ah caught you smiling at me
That's the way it should be
Like a leaf is to a tree, so fine
Ah all the good times we had
I sang love songs so glad
Always smiling, never sad, so fine

As we walk down the country lanes
I'll be singing a song, hear me calling your name
Hear the wind within the trees
Telling mother nature 'bout you and me

Well if the sunshine's so bright
Or on our way it's darkest night
The road we choose is always right, so fine
Ah can your love be so strong
When so many loves go wrong
Will our love go on and on and on and on and on and on?

As we walk down the country lanes
I'll be singing a song, Hear me calling your name
Hear the wind within the trees
Telling mother nature 'bout you and me

My, my la de la come on now it ain't too far
Tell your friends all around the world
Ain't no companion like a blue eyed merle
Come on now well let me tell you
What you're missing, missing, 'round them brick walls

So of one thing I am sure
It's a friendship so pure
Angels singing all around My dog is so fine
Yeah, ain't but one thing to do
Spend my nat'ral life with you
You're the finest dog I knew, so fine
When you're old and your eyes are dim
There ain't no old shep gonna happen again
We'll still go walking down country lanes
I'll sing the same old songs, hear me call your name

This song is about Plant's dog "Strider". It is a blue merle Collie with blue eyes. The dog can be seen in the movie "The Song Remains The Same". In the beginning there are scenes with each band member. There are a lot of breeds that can have a red or blue merle colour. "Old Shep" is a reference to an old Elvis Presley song ("Old Shep"), where a boy has to put down his dog, because it was too old. Plant promises Strider that he won't let it happen to him.

This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.

this is one of Zeppelin's finer pieces, and is about Plant's dog Strider and the relationship between man and man's best friend.

Robert Plant himself refers to this song as "as song about my dog." He also screams the dog's name "Strider" after the song on the DVD. It is definitely about his dog. Like many of Plant's works the dog's name references the Lord of the Rings.

There is MUCH more to Led Zeppelin than Stairway...

I assume he named his dog after the Strider (Aragorn) from Lord of the Rings...Am I right?

Also, Stairway to Heaven is awesome (Listen to it in reverse...he..he..he), but everytime I here a different recording he sings it different..

It's about his dog?! Oh, God, I'm a total sap. I really thought it was a straightforward love song ... Whatever. This song rules and it's the highlight of their third album. By the way, is "The Song Remains The Same" a biopic of Led Zep?

this song is so freakin sweet...when i listen to the live version, i can just picture the band playin it on stage, and SMILING... such a happenin' song...

about the 'OLD SHEP': i read somewhere that Plant at one point in time also got a german shepherd, but Strider wasn't too happy with the divided attention. this line is reassuring strider that he can't be replaced.
