He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.
In my time of dying, want nobody to mourn
All I want for you to do is take my body home
Well, well, well, so I can die easy
Well, well, well, so I can die easy
Jesus, gonna make up/out siviers
Jesus, gonna make up my dyin' bed
Meet me, Jesus, meet me
Oh meet me in the middle of the air
If my wings should fail me, Lord
Oh please meet me with another pair
Well, well, well, so I can die easy
Well, well, well, so I can die easy
Jesus, gonna make up
Somebody, somebody
Oh, oh Jesus gonna make up
Jesus gonna make you my dyin' bed
Oh, Saint Peter, at the gates of heaven
Won't you let me in
I never did no harm
I never did no wrong
Oh, Gabriel, let me blow your horn
Let me blow your horn
Oh, I never did, did no harm
I've only been this young once
I never thought I'd do anybody no wrong
No, not once
Oh, I did somebody some good
Somebody some good yeah
Oh, did somebody some good yeah
I must have did somebody some good yeah
Oh I believe I did
I see the smiling faces
I know I must have left some traces
And I see them in the streets
And I see them in the field
And I hear them shouting under my feet
And I know it's got to be real
Oh, Lord, deliver me
All the wrong I've done
You can deliver me, Lord
I only wanted to have some fun
Hear the angels marchin'
Hear the' marchin', hear them marchin'
Hear them marchin', the' marchin'
(Oh my Jesus)
It's got to be my Jesus
Oh, it's got to be, it's got to be my Jesus
it's got to be my oh
it's got to be my Jesus
Oh take me home
Come on, come on I can hear the answer, sing it
Oh, here they come
Here they come
Here they come
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Oh, feels pretty good, don't you?
Pretty good, I feel
(Oh, Georgina)
(Oh)
Oh, yeah
Oh, I see him
Come on
(Take it)
Oh, don't you make it my dyin', dyin', dyin'
Cough, "that's gonna be the one, isn't it?"
"Come have a listen, then"
Oh yes, thank you
All I want for you to do is take my body home
Well, well, well, so I can die easy
Well, well, well, so I can die easy

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
i LOVE this song.....i want it played at my funeral (and i'm not even christian)
Adman is correct actually. In the wonderful movie "It Might get Loud" about the electric guitar with Jimmy Page, Jack White and the Edge, Blind Willy Johnson is credited as being greatly influential to them. From their own testimony. Brilliant film. If you like this song then you have to see this film.
There are no sexual innuendos in the lyrics. This is about dying, the hereafter, and pleading with God to accept your excuses about your life and hope to play music in heaven.
But a pervert will make everything seem perverse and see sexual innuendo in everything anybody sings or says and make everything seem perverted. Pointless arguing with a twisted mind because you get a twisted argument back.
"In all respect" it is amazing how nutty the posts are on forums such as this. Zeppelin's early work was largely covers of blues artists, including Blind Willie Johnson. Blind Willie was a major influence on Jimmy Page's guitar work. This song and "Nobody's Fault But Mine" are tributes to Blind Willie's slide guitar work, which was beyond anything that has ever been done since. It is equally amazing how people get some of their crazy ideas about songs...i.e. "...an indictment of Christianity." Hello? The lyrics were lifted directly from Blind Willie's work. In addition to being arguably the finest slide guitar player that ever lived, Blind Willie Johnson was a Christian Evangelist. The more you learn about music, the more you will appreciate this fact.
This song is about a man who is about to die. He is praying to Christ to forgive his sins and welcome him into Heaven.
This dude is repentin let him!
Much of Zeppelins work was derived from the Missippi Delta blues. One artist in particular was Blind Willie Johnson. Blind Willie was a "street preacher" and slide guitar player. He is credited by many including Eric Clapton and Keith Richards as being the finest slide guitar player who ever lived. This song, "In My Time of Dying" are derived from Blind Willie's works...including the famous line "Jesus Gonna Make Up My Dyin' Bed". Pagey's slide guitar work is also a tribute to Blind Willie. Unfortunately, Page liked to "steal" ideas from early Blues artists without giving them any mentions on the credits.
I wonder if Plant considers it as it was meant to be. He has hardly lived a Christian life. On the DVD he asks, after the line "Oh Gabriel, let me blow your horn", "have you ever had your horn blown?" Could this be a sexual reference? -- if so, an abomination to God! Blind Willie, a gospel preacher would turn over in his grave.
@Adman haha i hope it is a sexual reference
Great song. Love Page's work in it.
This is easily one of my favorite Zeppelin Songs. The main emphasis is about a man who has recently died. He is pleading to the saints (Gabriel, Peter) to let him into heaven. I do not think the band tells us whether he makes it into heaven or not, but I could be wrong.
a great cover by Zeppelin, originally done by Blind Willie Johnson, the original performer of another Zeppelin hit, "Nobody's Fault but Mine". both songs have a similar theme: a man on his deathbed seeking out justification for his life, owning up to his sins, and seeking forgiveness.
Nope it was not originally done by him. It was a traditional song, nobody knows who wrote it. It certainly existed before he recorded it.
ahh i just love this song... only 8 people commented on it? thats suprising...great song!
