Product Description
A collection of intermediate-level pieces from quite short to longer and more involved, and frequently involving a "theme and variations" sort of thing. Players are encouraged to improvise on the themes and make their own variations on them.
The MP3 sample linked above contains short sections of each piece in order.
Prologue/Bitter Clean: A bit of poignant dissonance leading into some easygoing sparkle
Moon of Memory: Occasioned by a childhood memory of an impossibly enormous full moon rising over the Atlantic Ocean on a cloudless night
Falling Awake: Playing around with a favorite chord progression in the musical equivalent of an autumn forest ramble knowing that there's a mug of hot cider waiting back at the cabin for you
Thunder and Stars: The most challenging piece in the collection, an etude with rocking octaves in the right hand and some nice, juicy chords in the left, ending with a nice little musical sigh. Where the left hand contains more interest, don't be afraid to put most of the "juice" there. And don't think I was clever when I reprised the opening fanfare in the middle of the piece -- I'd written the middle first!
Free and Clear: A quiet lift at the edge of a windswept cliff, then just clouds beneath you and fresh air as far as you can see
Before the Fire: A simple, standard chord progression toyed with in an explicitly theme-and-variations way. Try some yourself!
