The band announced the official release of the song on social media a day before its premiere:

In an interview with Esquire, Ben Lovett says that [“If I Say”] reflects on how no one wins within a loving relationship that has become a battle. Lovett says that he dreamt the song up and then the next day recorded it. The string arrangement was lifted from a Sally Herbert song.
