Funeral Lyrics

[Verse 1: James Bay]
I know it's not how you planned it
But that's not the worst thing in the world
I know that you're scared
'Cause you think I'll let you down again
But I wouldn't, girl

[Chorus: Maisie Peters & James Bay]
I want you to want me when you're dead
To roll in your grave like we're not done yet
To call off the whole damn funeral
'Cause our love is so damn beautiful
I want you to know that the past is past
That everything changed when I heard you laugh
'Cause you sitting there with your headphones in
You were the point of all this living

[Verse 2: Maisie Peters]
I'm sure that you're right
And I can't blame you for things you haven't done yеt
Even if I'm scared you will
And I think a lot about May
About meeting you that day
I was late and a sеrial blusher
Never made it to the second date
[Chorus: Maisie Peters & James Bay]
But I want you to want me despite all that
To live every day like the plane might crash
To chase every satellite and star
I'd pin all of my hopes to your handlebars
The truth is I'd be such a jealous ghost
I'd scrub all your lovers' names out the stone
'Cause you sitting there with your headphones in
You were the point of all this living

[Bridge: Maisie Peters, James Bay, Both]
Your heart was full of boys and brimstones
Yours was full of girls who lied
Both got hurt by other people
Both found each other, baby, right in time
I don't need to live forever, just not one day longer than you
Ooh, ooh, ooh

[Chorus: Maisie Peters & James Bay]
I want you to want me when you're dead
To roll in your grave like we're not done yet
To call off the whole damn funeral
Because our love was so damn beautiful

Genius Answer

I wrote this in my bedroom in London very much as a duet. I remember saying, “I want James Bay to sing this, and I don’t want anyone else.” Taylor Swift’s folklore came out around when I was writing this track, and “exile,” the duet with Bon Iver, was a big inspiration. It’s a song about being scared of how much you need somebody and how much you care about somebody.

Genius Answer

Being asked to make a whole soundtrack was a huge challenge as I’d never done anything like that before, but it was super interesting to me, so, I said “yes.” Having spoken with Jim [O’Hanlon] and reading all the scripts, I started piecing it together with Joe [Rubel] and we wrote the bulk of it in two months last winter over FaceTime. Building the universe was so fun, and it was really special getting to collaborate with James, Griff, and Bear’s Den, as I’ve been big fans of them most of my life.
