John Hughes Movie
Producers
This wasn't how it's supposed to go
I should be the one you're dancing with
Spinning with a vodka coke
Everybody at my fingertips
I was gonna get my coat
And baby, you were meant to follow me
And I was gonna act surprised
Even though I'd know you wanted me
[Pre-Chorus]
It's not like I've been crying, no
There's just smoke in my eyes
[Chorus]
'Cause this ain't no John Hughes movie where the girl gets the guy
You look right through me every time you walk by
I keep waiting for the heartbreak music that's never gonna come
'Cause if you don't want me
Then you're not the one
[Post Chorus]
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh
Sitting on a bathroom floor
Trying to get my composure back
Think I built it up too tall
Knew I should've worn my Adidas
Maybe if I'd reined it in
You wouldn't wanna kiss somebody else
And you don't owe me anything
So I'm just gonna walk home by myself
[Pre-Chorus]
It's not like I've been crying, no
There's just smoke in my eyes
[Chorus]
'Cause this ain't no John Hughes movie where the girl gets the guy
You look right through me every time you walk by
I keep waiting for the heartbreak music that's never gonna come
'Cause if you don't want me
Then you're not the one
[Post Chorus]
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, no, no, you're not the one
What am I gonna say?
What am I gonna do?
All of our stupid friends
Know that I'm here for you
Guess I misunderstood
Thought you liked me too
What am I gonna say?
What am I gonna do?
Everyone told me so
Don't wait around for you
Guess I misunderstood
Thought you liked me too
[Chorus]
'Cause this ain't no John Hughes movie where the girl gets the guy
You look right through me every time you walk by
I keep waiting for the heartbreak music that's never gonna come
'Cause if you don't want me
Then you're not the one
[Post Chorus]
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, oh, then you're not the one
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, na-na-na
Oh, no, no, you're not the one
You're not the one, not the one, no
You're not the one, not the one, no
Not the one, no
Oh, no, no, you're not the one
You're not the one, not the one, no
You're not the one, not the one, no
'Cause if you don't want me
Then you're not the one
About
“John Hughes Movie” discusses the importance of self love and the dangers of romanticization. Similar to plots of John Hughes movies, Maisie goes to a party hoping to kindle a romance with her crush. However, she soon realizes that her crush is interested in someone else when she arrives, causing her to have self-doubts and sadness at being rejected. Ultimately though, she realizes that she will find someone to appreciate her for who she is.
The music video shows Maisie wandering around looking sad and seemingly ignored by what seems to be her crush, surrounded by zombie boys, a nod to how insignificant their opinions of her are. Maisie does reclaim her strength at the end of the music video, emphasizing the importance of self-love and acceptance. In a book titled “KILL BOOK,” she appears to “cross her lover out”, metaphorically killing this boy.
Maisie first teased this song on her instagram on November 20, 2020. She hinted at it again on January 13, 2021, before officially announcing its release on February 17, 2021. Maisie mentioned that this song was the result of a 3 year process, one she started at seventeen years of age.

Yes!
In the 2021 article on Dork, Maisie Peters explains:
I wrote ‘ John Hughes Movie ’ when I was 17 about a house party that I had gone to. It’s a really honest depiction of being a hopeless, melodramatic teenager, being awkward and drunk and getting your heart broken by people you don’t even remember anymore. John Hughes films encapsulate that foolish romantic energy of high school and everything that I, a small town English wannabe Molly Ringwald wanted to be, but was not.
I wrote this when I was 17, and it just never felt right to come out at the time. We reworked it for the album, then I sent it to [LA producers] AFTERHRS, who have done a lot of my stuff and who gave it a shine. This song is so naive and hopeful and stupid and embarrassing and teenage. The first half of this album hits you round the face with melodrama.
