Lunar Years Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I know something that you don't know
Scathing down the landline, I still kind of love you
And I'm four steps forward in my plimsolls
But I still wanna stab any girl that wants to touch you
Church bells ringing for a fresh start
But you had a head start, always such an athlete
And no one wants to kiss a bad sport
So I keep my head high, wave at all your family

[Pre-Chorus]
I knew you until you were someone else
And I don't know if you ever knew yourself

[Chorus]
I guess we just weren't meant to be in love forever
And I guess people just change
You got good, I got better
But I still care about you, and I think I'll care forevеr
And I'm glad we got to do
All those perfеct, ugly, almost priceless
Lost and lovely lunar years together

[Verse 2]
I know something that you don't know
These days all our friends think you're kind of an arsehole
And I've been cleaning up my sad act
Incense in the hallways burning through the charcoal

London's pretty in the autumn, and I'm a nicer person
Now I'm not your person, funny how that works and
Funny that we're working now
[Chorus]
I guess we just weren't meant to be in love forever
And I guess people just change
You got good, I got better
But I still care about you, and I think I'll care forever
And I'm glad we got to do
All those perfect, ugly, almost priceless
Lost and lovely lunar years together

[Post-Chorus]
Oh woah, mmm
Oh woah, yeah

[Pre-Chorus]
I knew you until you were someone else
And I don't know if you ever knew yourself

[Chorus]
I guess we just weren't meant to be in love forever
And I guess people just change
You got good, I got better
But I still care about you, and I think I'll care forever
And I'm glad we got to do
All those perfect, ugly, almost priceless
Lost and lovely lunar years together
[Post-Chorus]
Mmm

Genius Answer

This track was talking about the first scene in the first episode of Season 2, featuring Nikki’s sister Karen. It’s a scene about furious love: “I hate you, but I still love you.” But it didn’t work for episode 1: It didn’t feel light enough, so it kind of wandered around without a home for a while. Because we wrote it intending it for the first song, I wanted it to have this pace and this immediacy. It feels different—it’s more poppy—and it’s funnier and kind of tongue-in-cheek. It’s a song that says, “I guess we just weren’t meant to be in love forever” balanced with this very fun line: “You got good, I got better.” But I also like its acknowledgement of the time you spend with someone: “I know I care about you, and I think I’ll care forever.” I love that being the last lyric of the soundtrack. It felt like a nice way to wrap it up.
