In a now-deleted tumblr post, Mann explained some controversy regarding his song “Bend Ya” with Frank Ocean and Kendrick Lamar. In the post, it was revealed Frank’s vocals for that song and his vocals for “Lovely Day” were recorded during the same session. While Frank’s “Bend Ya” performance was scrapped just before the song’s release, “Lovely Day” saw an official release on an earlier mixtape by Mann, and thus still featured Frank’s vocals.
On “Lovely Day”, Ocean was still credited by his real name Lonny Breaux. According to the tumblr post, the recording session between Mann and Ocean was the moment the latter decided to take on his Frank Ocean moniker.
The chorus is Frank’s take on a Bill Withers classic, also titled “Lovely Day”. The song is known for the length of the iconic, monotonous “day” in the background of the chorus, which Frank perfectly emulates in this version.
