In a September 2000 interview with MTV, Jimmy Jam said that he and Terry Lewis were working on a duet for Mariah Carey’s [then titled] All That Glitters soundtrack with Eric Benét, who co-stars in the flick.

I think we’re up to 11 or 12 songs now, and we’re just getting ready to add another song, because Eric Benét is in the movie. So now there’s this idea for a duet with Eric Benét and Mariah, and we’re in the process of working on that. [We’re writing material] as the movie evolves, and [Mariah] is in Canada shooting it right now. We just get the phone call saying, ‘Hey, I need another track for a such-and-such scene,’ and we just turn it around for her.

In an interview with BBC Radio in August 2001, Mariah said:

The track I did with Eric Benet, ‘Want You’, that I did with Jimmy and Terry Lewis, and since they did all the SOS band, Alexander ONeal, Cherrelle – all those records that I loved growing up, I said “Guys, can we do something very SOS Band but new?” and because they have the same synthesizers from back in the day, they’ve got the same reverb plates that they used. Nobody can recreate that unless they loop it, but we did a track that’s classic Jam and Lewis… if you listen to that, it’s very much, “is that an SOS Band record?!”
