Genius Annotation

It seems Matt Maeson is exploring a dichotomy between the perspectives of someone struggling with grief, trauma, or general mental health issues and those who love them but fail in supporting them.

The verses are presented as conversational and friendly, but both end with the same well intentioned imploration to “block it out of your mind”. This is seemingly in regards to the pain that the subject is dealing with but, as the chorus shows, may have a chilling effect on the subject rather than being of any comfort.

He snaps us out of the friendly conversation with the yelled “And suck it up…”. The “and” being key, making clear that it is the same person who just gently encouraged the subject to block it out of their mind.

Rather than this being a literal statement by the other person, I think it is meant to illustrate how well intentioned statements like “move on” or “don’t dwell on it” may be interpreted and digested by the person dealing with the pain.

Those statements reduce the affliction to a simple choice, move on. This implies that the person is choosing to live in the pain of trauma or mental illness, as if those issues are somehow more simple than things like physical illness and the mere will of the person is enough to overcome it.

So in short, the verses are the literal conversation and words spoken and the chorus is the perception that the subject walks away from the conversation with.
