Voice-Over Intro/Voice-Over Session From Thriller Lyrics

[Narration]
And now a behind-the-scenes treat from the original voice-over session for "Thriller", with Michael and Vincent Price. You'll also hear the never-before-released second verse of Vincent's rap, written by Rod

[Bruce Swedien]
Okay, tape's rolling. Any--anytime you want

[Intro, take 1: Michael Jackson & Vincent Price]
Hi, this is Michael Jackson
This is Vincent Price
Michael Jackson is...
The Thriller!

[Segue: Michael Jackson, Vincent Price, Bruce Swedien]
*Vincent laughs*
Do we both say it?
Say it together?
"Inviting you to."
I say "inviting you to"? All right. Yeah
Okay
Any time. Tape's rolling

[Intro, take 2: Michael Jackson, Vincent Price, Michael Jackson & Vincent Price]
Hi, this is Michael Jackson
And this is Vincent Price, inviting you to...
The Thriller!
[Verse 1: Vincent Price]
Darkness falls across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize your neighborhood
And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside a corpse's shell

[Verse 2: Vincent Price]
The demons squeal in sheer delight
It's you they spy, so plump, so right
For though the groove is hard to beat
Yet still you stand with frozen feet
You try to run, you try to scream
But no more sun you'll ever see
For evil reaches from the crypt
To crush you in its icy grip

[Verse 3: Vincent Price]
The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of 40,000 years
And grisly ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom

And though you fight to stay alive
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of the Thriller
[Outro: Vincent Price]
Can you dig it?
Hmmm-Hahahahaha...
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Ahahahahahahah...

[Post-outro: Vincent Price & Bruce Swedien]
Hmmph, that's great fun!
Great, thank you. Cut
Okay. All right!

About

Genius Annotation

The full, previously unreleased voice-over poem written by Rod Temperton, recorded by Quincy Jones and featuring Vincent Price alongside Michael Jackson, was first released as a bonus track on Thriller: 2001 Special Edition, as well on the deluxe disc of Thriller 25.

Vincent Price was an accomplished actor with a distinct voice, starring in films such as Brigham Young, House of Wax, House of Usher, The Fly, and Catchfire, Edward Scissorshands, and narrating The Vagabond King, Pictura: An Adventure in Art, Spirits of the Dead, PBS' Mystery, and A Christmas Carol. He provided his voice to Roger Glover’s live rock-opera/film “The Butterfly Ball and the The Grasshopper’s Feast”, The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, Tilex commercials, and Tiny Toon Adventures. Tim Burton and Disney also produced a stop-motion animated short film dedicated to him, Vincent, in 1980, which he also narrated in. He also frequently appeared on The Hollywood Squares and had his own cooking show.

Temperton wanted to add a “talking section” into the song, provided by “somebody, a famous voice, in the horror genre,” and upon the advice of Quincy Jones' wife, called Price to do it. However, he didn’t actually have the rap written and penned it in a taxi to the studio. When it was time to record it, Price was startled because he was using headphones for the first time, so he had to practice with Temperton and Jones to perform the vocals over the song. After the rehearsals, though, Michael and Vincent only needed these two takes to do it.

Michael’s contribution, their introductions, and the second verse of the poem did not make it to the song. The phrase ‘Can You Dig It?’, before his infamous laugh, also was cut. Vincent’s introduction and the ‘Dig It’ phrase were released as a bonus excerpt that was a standard track on Thriller 25.

In the video-film Michael Jackson’s Thriller, the movie that Michael and his girlfriend (Ola Ray) are watching is Vincent Price’s THRILLER, a film-within-a-film. It was also rumored that the giant at the end of the video (seen below) is Vincent himself – He was 6'4".

What did Michael Jackson say about "Voice-Over Intro/Voice-Over Session From Thriller"?
Genius Answer

From Wikipedia:

While Temperton was writing “Thriller” he stated that he’d “always envisioned” a “talking section at the end” on the song, but did not really know what “to do with it”, until deciding “to have somebody, a famous voice, in the horror genre, to do this vocal.” [Quincy] Jones' then-wife, Peggy Lipton, who knew Vincent Price, suggested Price for the vocal part, which Price agreed to do.

On an episode of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Price told Carson that when he agreed to do the voice work, he was given a choice between taking a percentage of Thriller’s sales or an upfront $20,000. He chose the latter mainly because he was established and didn’t need money. At the suggestion of Price receiving a substantial amount of money if he had chosen the former, he laughed and said “How well I know!”
