I woke up in Montecito
I was thinkin' about my life
And the questions made more questions
Starin' out into the night
Yes, I've worn the golden G-string
Put my hand into hellfire
I did it all to make you love me and to feel alive
[Chorus]
Oh, that's just the world that we're livin' in
The old boys hold all the cards and they ain't playin' gin
You dare to call me crazy, have you looked around this place?
I should walk away
Oh, I should walk away
But I think I'll stay
[Verse 2]
There are layers to this body
Primal sex and primal shame
They told me I should cover it
So I went the other way
I was tryin' to own my power
Still I'm tryin' to work it out
And at least it gives the paper somethin' they can write about
And oh, that's just the world that we're livin' in
The old boys hold all the cards and they ain't playin' gin
And you dare to call me crazy, have you looked around this place?
I should walk away
Oh, I should walk away
But I think I'll stay
[Bridge]
So the mad man's in the big chair
And his heart's an iron vault
He says "If you can't make ends meet, honey, it must be your fault"
We all focus on the winners
And get blinded by their shine
Maybe caring for each other's just too 1969
[Chorus]
But oh, that's just the world that we're livin' in
The old boys hold all the cards and they ain't playin' gin
And you dare to call me crazy, have you looked around this place?
I should walk away
Oh, I should walk away
But I think I'll stay
[Outro]
And I think I'll stay, yeah
I have too much to lose
So I think I'll stay
I can't walk away

Speaking with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Miley Cyrus said this about “Golden G String”:
We wrote this song, it probably was in 2017-2018, something like that. This, again, is kind of reflective of Donald Trump as President and, you know, the men hold all the cards and they ain’t playing gin and they kind of determine your fate. This song, which is also about kind of like the cross I’ve had to bear in a way of like saying: “I feel like everything that I’ve done has just been up for all the opinions and I guess people being offended and like all the shit”, but it’s like, you know, our President grabs women by the pussy and you’re mad at me? I’m a pop star, I’m supposed to do these things. I’m supposed to do things that sometimes make you uncomfortable or you take offense. That’s kind of my job, that’s entertainment. I don’t want that in a leader, you know. I consider myself a leader but I would say that actually is creating the like country that we’re going to live in, you don’t want an entertainer. I have no desire to be president, because I have only a desire to create art and to be an artist and to— I want to do what I do and I think that there’s an idea that I’ve kind of focused on of mastery of finding the thing that you love and becoming the best at it. You can’t be everything.
According to Billboard, the song was written in either 2017 or 2018.
This alludes to the last years of 1960s' height of counter culture movement becoming more and more prevalent in the U.S., civil rights movement, and anti-Vietnam War Movement. Popular music in the late 1960s were largely about peace, love, and “caring for each other,” which was the theme of the 1969 Woodstock Festival.
Many demonstrations of U.S. involvement in Vietnam War occurred during the late 1960s to early 1970s until the war ended in 1975. Under Nixon’s presidency in 1969, the number of U.S. Marines deployment in Vietnam dropped drastically
1969 also marks the year when Stonewall Riots occurred in support of gay liberation movement. Due to the illegal nature of LGBT bars at the time, the riots were formed to counter police brutality against LGBT people and in efforts to establish places where LGBT people can be without fear of being arrested for their sexuality and gender.
