[Intro: Miley Cyrus]
Prisoner, prisoner, locked up
Can't get you off my mind, off my mind
Lord knows I tried a million times, million times, oh-woah
Why can't you, why can't you just let me go?

[Verse 1: Dua Lipa & Miley Cyrus]
Strung out on a feeling, my hands are tied
Your face on my ceiling, I fantasize
Oh, I can't control it, I can't control it (I can't control it)
I try to replace it with city lights
I'll never escape it, I need the high
Oh, I can't control it, I can't control it (Oh)

[Pre-Chorus: Miley Cyrus]
You keep making it harder to stay
But I still can't run away
I gotta know why can't you, why can't you just let me go?

[Chorus: Dua Lipa & Miley Cyrus]
Prisoner, prisoner, locked up
Can't get you off my mind, off my mind
Lord knows I tried a million times, million times, oh-woah
Why can't you, why can't you just let me go?
Prisoner, prisoner, locked up
Can't get you off my mind, off my mind
Lord knows I tried a million times, million times, oh-woah
Why can't you, why can't you just let me go?

[Verse 2: Miley Cyrus]
I tasted Heaven, now I can't live without it
I can't forget you and your love is the loudest

Oh, I can't control it, I can't control it (Can't control it)

[Pre-Chorus: Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus & Both]
You keep making it harder to stay (Oh, ah)
But I still can't run away
I gotta know, why can't you, why can't you just let me go?

[Chorus: Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa & Both]
Prisoner, prisoner, locked up
Can't get you off my mind, off my mind
Lord knows I tried a million times, million times, oh-woah
Why can't you, why can't you just let me go?
Prisoner, prisoner, locked up
Can't get you off my mind, off my mind
(Off my mind)
Lord knows I tried a million times, million times, oh-woah
Why can't you, why can't you just let me go?

[Outro: Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa & Both]
Can't get you off my mind
Why can't you just let me go?
Million times
I wanna know why can't you, why can't you
I wanna know why can't you, why can't you
I gotta know why can't you, why can't you just let me go?

About

Genius Annotation

Miley Cyrus teams up with British singer Dua Lipa on “Prisoner,” the fourth track from Cyrus' seventh studio album Plastic Hearts. The song was released as the album’s second single on November 19, 2020, a week before the album’s release.

The song, which interpolates Olivia Newton-John’s 1981 track “Physical” (just like the Dua Lipa track of the same name), is about being in an abusive or controlling relationship in which one person manipulates the other to stay, causing them to feel like a prisoner.

“Prisoner” was also included on Future Nostalgia – The Moonlight Edition, the re-issue of Dua Lipa’s highly successful sophomore album. The re-issue was released on February 12th, 2021 via Warner Records, and is featured as the fourteenth track of the record.

Speaking with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Miley Cyrus said this about “Prisoner”:

What I love about ‘Prisoner,‘ I mean, I think it’s also coming at a perfect time for everybody. I mean, in a way […] I feel too, I mean, we’re just trapped in our emotions right now. I mean, really me, there’s no escaping it. It’s like, ‘Locked up, can’t get you off my mind.’ It’s like anything that you’ve tried to suppress or compartmentalize at that point, it’s coming up. It’s yours to own, to own it or release it.
In a way, her and I, we have a lot of things in common, if you look at us. I would say our love for fashion, this is my number one, me and Dua [Lipa] both. She’s probably the only person that can rival my collection of fuzzy hats.

I think she wears her inside out and I love that. Because I like when you walk into a room, she’s recognizable. To me, that’s a star. […] I love that about her. I also love that she’s very direct. We edited this video on text message, me and her directly as artists. I just don’t want to play telephone when I’m making music. I want to make it with who I’m making with. I don’t want to do a song with someone’s manager. I want to do a song with the artist. Her allowing me to have that direct line of communication and then also the ability to just trust each other, both of us, I think our egos are pretty in check that she’s very willing and I’m very willing. There’s just, also, there’s a lack of competition because in the ways that we’re so much alike, we’re very different. We’re not competing, I’m just not like that.
