The melody and overall atmosphere of the song is somewhat melancholic. The way the lyrics are sung is soft and gentle which adds to the overall eerie and somewhat sad mood of the song. The atmosphere combined with the lyrics work to present a somewhat jaded and dejected outlook on what life has become, as the narrator reflects on his failed attempts to mend his problems and find a light to guide him.

There is a duality throughout the song between the narrator accepting the dullness of life and wanting it to change, as well as the contradiction of wanting to be left alone while at the same time longing for help. All these contradicting feelings could easily symbolise the inner conflicts a depressive person deals with.
