Shelter Lyrics

[Intro: MOD SUN]
You let me in, you're my shelter from everything
My medicine, so much better than therapy

[Verse 1: MOD SUN]
I'm swerving into oncoming traffic
Then you grab the wheel
I'm turning into what I hate
So broken, but you help me heal

[Pre-Chorus: MOD SUN]
When all my bright sides are turning so dark
And the night feels like forever
When I am cold and I'm falling apart
You safety-pin me back together

[Chorus: MOD SUN]
You let me in, you're my shelter from everything
My medicine, so much better than therapy
When I'm feelin' like shit, wanna drive off a cliff
When I hate my own skin, you take care of me
You let me in, you're my shelter from everything

[Verse 2: Avril Lavigne, MOD SUN, Both]
Suddenly, I contemplate
What it's like to breathe underwater (Breathe underwater)

I orchestrate a sad parade
The end doesn't seem so much farther
[Pre-Chorus: Avril Lavigne & MOD SUN, MOD SUN]
When all my bright sides are turning so dark (So dark)
And the night feels like forever
When you are cold and you're falling apart
I'll safety-pin you back together (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

[Chorus: Avril Lavigne & MOD SUN, MOD SUN]
You let me in (You let me in), you're my shelter from everything
My medicine (My medicine), so much better than therapy (So much better)
When I'm feelin' like shit, wanna drive off a cliff
When I hate my own skin, you take care of me
You let me in (You let me in), you're my shelter from everything

[Bridge: MOD SUN & Avril Lavigne]
Oh-ooh-oh, oh-ooh-oh
Please don't ever go, go
Please, don't ever go

[Chorus: MOD SUN, Avril Lavigne, Both]
You let me in, you're my shelter from everything (Everything)
My medicine, so much better than therapy
When I'm feelin' like shit (Like shit), wanna drive off a cliff (Off a cliff)
When I hate my own skin, you take care of me (You take care of me)
You let me in, you're my shelter from everything

[Outro: MOD SUN & Avril Lavigne]
Oh-ooh-oh (Oh-woah), oh-ooh-oh (Oh-woah)
Please, don't ever go, go
Please, don't ever go

Genius Annotation

“Shelter” is the fourth track on God Save The Teen by MOD SUN, released on February 3, 2023. Joined by Avril Lavigne, it is the second song of his that she has been featured on, and the first MOD SUN song (aside from the acoustic version of Flames) they worked on and released together while in a relationship. The two broke up in late February of 2023.

The song was shown on Jan. 25th, when the trailer was rolled out, showing Mod hiding in a tent on the beach, taking shelter for the upcoming storm:

With Zach Sang Mod talked about the inspiration that led to the song and Avril as a feature: ZS: “This song came from a specific incident that happened, talking about the dark place my mind can go. Finding shelter and a warm safe place in this world with another human being is extremely fortunate, to say the least. She pulled me away from that cliff when I was about to jump off. I tried to get the Goo Goo Dolls on there. It was about to happen, then it didn’t and I got upset. She was like "That might be the universe telling me I should get on it.” And that’s how it went down."

About the song itself with Zach Sang: “It’s a song that has a beginning, a middle and an end. It has a conclusion and a start. It talks about "I’m swerving into oncoming traffic, then you grab the wheel”, about “When all my bright sides are turning so dark, you safety-pin me back together.”. And I think that is beautiful, for anyone in life, whether it’s a song that safes you, a person that safes you. A coincidence that isn’t real because it’s all meant to be safing you, and you see a sign and you go like ‘oh yeah’. I’ve had all those things happen to me. And I think that song can really touch people in that way."
