Cover Me Up Lyrics
A heart on the run keeps a hand on a gun
Can't trust anyone
I was so sure what I needed was more
Tried to shoot out the sun
The days when we raged, we flew off the page
Such damage was done
But I made it through, 'cause somebody knew
I was meant for someone
[Chorus]
So, girl, leave your boots by the bed, we ain't leavin' this room
'Til someone needs medical help or the magnolias bloom
It's cold in this house and I ain't goin' out to chop wood
So, cover me up and know you're enough to use me for good
[Verse 2]
I put your faith to the test when I tore off your dress
In Richmond on high
I sobered up, I swore off that stuff
Forever this time
And the old lover's sing, “I thought it'd be me
Who helped him get home”
But home was a dream, one that I'd never seen
'Til you came along
So, girl, hang your dress out to dry, we ain't leavin' this room
'Til Percy Priest breaks open wide and the river runs through
And carries this house on it's stones like a piece of driftwood
So, cover me up and know you're enough to use me for good
[Instrumental Bridge]
[Chorus]
So, girl, leave your boots by the bed, we ain't leavin' this room
'Til someone needs medical help or the magnolias bloom
It's cold in this house and I ain't goin' out to chop wood
So, cover me up and know you're enough to use me for good
[Outro]
So, cover me up and know you're enough to use me for good
About
“Cover Me Up” is a cover of an original song written by Jason Isbell. An emotional country ballad, the song tells a love story of a man who is reckless with himself until he meets his significant other and realizes that he can make himself a better man for the right person.
Wallen started performing the song at his concerts as early as November 2018, but it wasn’t until his sophomore album, Dangerous came out that fans got to hear a studio version of the cover.

The video for the song shows a man who has returned home from the war and has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from the war. In the beginning of the video, the man stays at home while his girlfriend goes off to work, while gone, he had a war flashback. When she comes home, she can’t find him and finds him drinking himself to sleep. Later on, they go out to his war buddy’s house who tells him that he is going back to the war, his friend’s baby starts crying and the man has an outburst and starts yelling at both the child and his girlfriend. He decides to try and fix himself and he does end up getting better. He decides to propose to his girlfriend and as he is writing what appears to be something to his girlfriend, he receives a phone call, presumably with the news that his friend has passed away in the service. The man starts crying, when his girlfriend comes home, she finds out that he attempted suicide and ends up calling 911. At the end of the video, we see that the man is back at home laying with his now wife, he has a hospital band on his arm and he seems to finally be at peace.
