“Follow Me” is a song that helped rebrand Airbnb.
The song communicates the company’s sentiment of uniquely connecting people through travel accommodations. It blends excitement with relaxation and faith with intimacy. The song represents the essence of Airbnb’s sonic identity and its simple, yet resonating, promise to users: “belong anywhere.”
In June 2014, Airbnb’s then-recently appointed CMO Jonathan Mildenhall reached out to Music Dealers. He tasked them with creating a custom brand anthem as part of Airbnb’s rebranding effort to get a new look and feel. The goal was to discover a song that conveys and shares the message “Belong anywhere”.
Music Dealers crowdsourced its community of independents and curated the song “Follow Me” by the UK-based band Moth & The Flame.
In one of their online case studies, Music Dealers also gives credit for the project to Joshua Burke, VP, Global Account Director at Airbnb.
Airbnb unveiled the song, their new logo the Bélo, and its story as a symbol of belonging at their July 16th, 2014 brand launch event in San Francisco. The song and the logo also complimented the brand’s new custom color and their newly-redesigned website.
Airbnb flew the band “Moth and the Flame” to San Francisco to perform July brand launch event. The song was so successful that they ended up creating a music video for it as well, filmed at an exquisite Airbnb listing in London.
