Speechless (Part 1) Lyrics

[Verse 1: JASMINE]
Here comes a wave
Meant to wash me away
A tide that is taking me under
Broken again
Left with nothing to say
My voice drowned out in the thunder

[Pre-Chorus: JASMINE]
But I can't cry
And I can’t start to crumble
Whenever they try
To shut me or cut me down

[Chorus: JASMINE]
I can't stay silent
Though they wanna keep me quiet
And I tremble when they try it
All I know is I won't go speechless

Genius Annotation

“Speechless (Part 1)” is the first part of two of Jasmine’s new letimotif, “Speechless.” Speechless was the only song that the songwriters of the live action remake had added, not being present in any other adaptation of the musical.

The first part of Speechless is actually a shorter version of the Speechless (Part 2) being only about half of its length. The purpose of this is to show Jasmine’s increasing frustration with being left speechless and outspoken. In the first part, she motivates herself, but cannot take any action against the obstacles she faces, whereas, in the second part, she finally takes action.

The specific instance where this song happens is after Jafar meets with Jasmine’s dad, the sultan. Jafar convinces him to invade Shirabad using his hypnotic scepter but is stopped by Jasmine. Jafar walks out, in defeat, but remembers to remind Jasmine to know her duty is only to marry a rich and powerful king, and not anything else. Jasmine sings this song to herself in rebuttal.
