Sugar Mountain (Live Rust) Lyrics

[Chorus]
Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons
You can't be 20 on Sugar Mountain
Though you're thinking that
You're leavin' there too soon
You're leavin' there too soon

[Verse 1]
It's so noisy at the fair
But all your friends are there
And the candy floss you had
And your mother and your dad

[Chorus]
Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons
You can't be 20 on Sugar Mountain
Though you're thinking that
You're leavin' there too soon
You're leavin' there too soon

[Verse 2]
There's a girl just down the aisle
Oh to turn and see her smilе
You can hear the words she wrotе
As you read a hidden note
[Chorus]
Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons
You can't be 20 on Sugar Mountain
Though you're thinking that
You're leavin' there too soon
You're leavin' there too soon

[Verse 3]
Now you're underneath the stairs
And you're giving back some glares
To the people that you met
And it's your first cigarette

[Chorus]
Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons
You can't be 20 on Sugar Mountain
Though you're thinking that
You're leavin' there too soon
You're leavin' there too soon

[Verse 4]
Now you say you're leaving home
'Cause you want to be alone
Ain't it funny how you feel
When you're findin' out it's real, real?
[Chorus]
Oh to live on Sugar Mountain
With the barkers and the colored balloons
You can't be 20 on Sugar Mountain
Though you're thinking that
You're leavin' there too soon
You're leavin' there too soon

Genius Annotation

Neil Young wrote “Sugar Mountain” on his 19th birthday (November 12, 1964) when he was playing with the Squires. The first recording of the song that was released was a live performance from his first series of solo concerts that appeared as the b-side to Young’s 1969 single “The Loner”. The following year it was again a b-side, this time with “Cinnamon Girl” and in 1977 was included on the Decade collection. The song was a concert staple for Young in his early solo career through the 1970s.
