The Carnival Is Over Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Say goodbye, my one true lover
And we'll steal a lover's song
How it breaks my heart to leave you
Now the carnival has gone

[Verse 2]
Oh my love, the dawn is breaking
And my tears are falling rain
For the carnival is over
We may never meet again

[Verse 3]
Like a drum my heart was beating
And your kiss was sweet as wine
But the joys of love are fleeting
For Pierrot and Columbine

[Verse 4]
Now the cloak of night is falling
This will be our last goodbye
Though the carnival is over
I will love you till I die
I will love you till I die
Yeah, I will love you till I die

Genius Annotation

The closing track of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds 1986 album, ‘Kicking Against the Pricks’ is a cover of The Seekers' 1965 famous song ‘The Carnival Is Over’. There are slight variations to the lyrics. The song acts as a fitting final song to what is an album filled with Cave’s interpretations of songs by other artists. Nick Cave’s unique aura and vocal prowess is on display in the melancholy reinterpretation of the track. The lead singer’s delivery and the Bad Seeds tweaked instrumental give the song a very different tone to the original by ‘The Seekers’. It is a gloomy song filled with despair. It is understandable why it was selected to be the closing moment on the album as it captures the feeling of letting go of one’s “true lover”.
