The Smart Sessions were intended to be the follow up to Nirvana’s first record, [Bleach], known at the time as Sheep. It ended up being just a studio demo to hand off to record executives so the band could finally get on a major label. The song, and 3 others from the session, would later feature on [Nevermind}, while the recording of Polly was just remixed.
It’s speculated that this was going to be the leading single for Sheep before the album was cancelled, as Sub Pop had commissioned a music video to go along with the song. This early edition of the In Bloom video, filmed in late April 1990, featured the members of Nirvana aimlessly wandering around the streets of Lower Manhattan, intercut with scenes of playing a show in Hoboken.
