If Love is the Law Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Here am I
I’m high up on a ledge

I’m standing on the edge of night
In a lonesome town
Where love has been and gone

I’m waiting for the storm to come back
And take me down

The things I left unsaid
Were lying on the bed

Right next to the face you wore
When you left me on my one
Now I’ve up here on my own
And I must say...

[Chorus]
I didn’t come here to make up your mind
I do believe that you were wasting my time
There’s no more tears left to cry myself blind
If love is the law
Then this is a crime

[Verse 2]
Memories
Forever set in stone
When all is said and done
They’re just like the fallen leaves
That you gather in your head
When the sun’s about to set
I sail out on stormy seas
But I cannot find the shore
Can’t hear you anymore
And there’s nothing left for me
I'm lying broken on the glass
And the ship’s about to crash
And I must say...
[Chorus]
I didn’t come here to make up your mind
I do believe that you were wasting my time
There’s no more tears left to cry myself blind
If love is the law
Then this is a crime

[Instrumentalisation]

[Chorus]
I didn’t come here to make up your mind
I do believe that you were wasting my time
There’s no more tears left to cry myself blind
If love is the law
Then this is a crime

[Chorus]
I didn’t come here to make up your mind
I do believe that you were wasting my time
There’s no more tears left to cry myself blind
If love is the law
Then this is a crime

What did Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds say about "If Love is the Law"?
Genius Answer

Noel Gallagher was speaking of the song to Chris Moyles on Radio X in an interview that was broadcast on 09.10.2017:

If Love is the Law started out of a conversation about Genesis, and ended up becoming like Phil Spector, and Johnny Marr plays harmonica on it and electric guitar. We spent another incredible day in the studio with Johnny – it’s massive that song, massive.

Speaking to Radio X on November 23th 2017, Noel Gallagher said of the song:

David was like, it needs a guitar thing and some lift towards the end. When someone says that to me, I call Johnny Marr! He’s one of my oldest friends, he’s very gracious with his time. Not a lot of people know that he’s got a guitar shaped phone in his house, that only I have the number for – when it rings, it glows red and white, he knows it’s me. He picks it up and says ‘The Boy Wonder. What can I do for you?’ I’m afraid, Batman, it’s that time again. It still blows my mind that he would even come and help us with a track.

Why does Johnny Marr play harmonica in addition to guitar on this song?
Genius Answer

According to Noel Gallagher:

It goes without saying that I love Johnny Marr’s guitar playing. But what I love equally is his harmonica playing, and I think the riff at the beginning of “Hand in Glove” is fucking…kills me every time. […] I said, “Do you fancy playing a bit of harmonica?” He looked a bit taken aback. […] When it kicks in in the middle bit of this track, fucking kills me every time. He’s an astonishing fucking dude.

What did Johnny Marr think about being asked to play harmonica on this track?
Genius Answer

According to Johnny Marr:

He had a harmonica sound in mind and I play it a certain kind of way, which is very simply. It’s the only way I can do it. I was kind of pretty gob-smacked when I heard the song, to be honest with you. […] I think it’s my favorite song on the record, so I’m very pleased to be on that particular song. And to be asked to play harmonica as well is really fantastic for me, because I used to play it a lot in The Smiths and The The. I haven’t played it for a while. And it works really well on the track. Very simple part.
