“making the bed" is a melancholic, self-deprecating ballad that serves as the sixth track on GUTS. Here, Olivia reflects on her dwindling satisfaction with fame and the state in her life general, but concludes that she only has herself to blame.
When talking with Phoebe Bridgers for Interview Magazine on September 5th, 2023, Rodrigo revealed that this was the hardest song on the album for her to write:
There’s one song that I wrote about how my life changed because of all of the things that happened with the last album and how crazy that was. It was cathartic in the end, but it was kind of hard dredging up all of that stuff. Anytime something bad happens with my career, I’m like, ‘Wow. I’m so lucky that I get to do this. You have to be grateful. So many people would love to be in this position.’ But you still have to acknowledge trauma.

I was 19 and had all this zest for life but also was in this industry for the first time, and that can be kind of alluring: Ooh, there’s all these exciting people and exciting things, all these fancy, shiny new toys. [I was buying into], like weird, interesting friends, or getting caught up in artificial interpretations of yourself. I say all this about separating person from persona, but it’s a strange thing when you become successful and get noticed for songs that are super raw and intimate, so on a certain level you feel like people really know you – and they do, but not in the way that your friends or family would know you.
