Genius Annotation

“lacy,” the fourth track of GUTS, sees Olivia blur the line between envy and homoeroticism.

In one lens, Rodrigo embraces her inferiority complex by personifying the beauty of women she’s intimidated by in this “Lacy” character. Similar to “jealousy, jealousy” and “obsessed,” Olivia succumbs to her habit of comparing herself to other women to an extent so extreme that it seems like a crippling romantic obsession.

On a September 14, 2023 interview for Wired, Rodrigo revealed that the song began as a poem she wrote for a college poetry class:

I took a poetry class, so that was really fun. We actually turned one of the songs that I wrote in the poetry class — the poem was called “lacy,” we turned it into a song on the album called “lacy,” so it was quite fruitful.
