Didn’t I Lyrics

[Intro]
Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I love you?
Didn't we, didn't we, didn't we fly?
Know that I, know that I still care for you
But didn't we, didn't we say goodbye?

[Verse 1]
Swear I saw your face
At a coffee shop on 8th
Or maybe it was in my mind
And I swear that I heard your laugh
From a person that walked past me
At a party the other night

[Pre-Chorus]
Never thought we'd ever have to go without
Take you over anybody else, hands down
We're the type of melody that don't fade out
Don't fade out, can't fade out

[Chorus]
Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I love you?
Didn't we, didn't we, didn't we fly?
Know that I, know that I still care for you
But didn't we, didn't we say goodbye?
Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I love you?
Didn't we, didn't we, didn't we try?
Know that I, know that I still care for you
Tell me why good things have to die
[Verse 2]
Do you remember all those plans
That we made after too many drinks
In the kitchen of your brother's apartment
When life was like a wishing well
4:00 AM and raising hell
Damn, I knew you oh-so well

[Bridge]
We had our moments, didn't we? (Oh)
So much that we will never be (Oh)
(Didn't we try?)
Know that I, know that I still care for you (For you)
Tell me why good things have to die (To die)

About

Genius Annotation

This next single off of OneRepublic’s fifth album Human features a piano based melody, in contrast to earlier singles like “Rescue Me” (dance based) and “Wanted” (string influenced). It also runs longer, at almost four minutes. Its theme centers around a lost relationship, wondering about the seemingly ephemeral nature of good events in our lives.

Ryan Tedder has written on this theme for his band before, in songs such as “Can’t Stop” and “Wherever I Go”.

Though the topic might not be directly relevant to Ryan, who is both a husband and a father, the song “Didn’t I” was inspired by painful divorces of many people around him: his friends, his own parents and his wife’s parents, as well. He insists that the songs he writes for 1R have to be “100% authentic and visceral to my human experience” saying quote: “if it’s not resonating with me, I can’t sing it…”

What did OneRepublic say about "Didn't I"?
Genius Answer

Ryan revealed that the song was inspired by a friend’s divorce in an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music:

I had this idea that when you marry somebody or you choose to be with them, it’s because you’ve had a lot of beautiful moments and somewhere the discord gets in. But then once you have the distance, and it does break up, and you do go through that divorce, you still have those moments. You look back and you go, you know what? This ended in a disaster, but weren’t we amazing, when we were amazing?
