Someday Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Some days, I'm treadin' the water
And feel like it's gettin' deep
Some nights, I drown in the weight
Of the things that I think I need
Sometimes, I feel incomplete, yeah
But you always say to me, say to me

[Chorus]
Oh, you say someday, when we're older
We'll be shinin' like we're gold
Yeah, won't we? (Won't we?) Won't we? (Won't we?)
Yeah, someday, when we're older
I'll be yours and you'll be mine
Babe, happy (Happy), happy
Oh, you say someday, when we're older
We won't worry 'bout the things
That we don't need (We don't need), we don't need (Oh)
Yeah, one day, down the line
Before we both run out of time, you're gonna see
That someday, we'll be all that we need

[Post-Chorus]
Someday, we'll be all that we need

[Verse 2]
I've been the best, been the worst
Been a ghost in a crowded room (Oh, yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah)
I took a chance, took a turn
Took a dive, and it led to you
(Oh, yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah)
So many times that I wish
We could be anywhere but here
So many times that I wish
I could see what you see so clear, so clear
[Chorus]
Oh, you say someday, when we're older
We'll be shinin' like we're gold
Yeah, won't we? (Won't we?) Won't we? (Won't we?) Yeah
Yeah, someday, when we're older
I'll be yours and you'll be mine
Babe, happy (Happy), happy
Oh, you say someday, when we're older
We won't worry 'bout the things
That we don't need (We don't need), we don't need (Oh)
Yeah, one day, down the line
Before we both run out of time, you're gonna see
That someday, we'll be all that we need

[Post-Chorus]
Someday, we'll be all that we need

[Outro]
Oh, you say someday, when we're older
We'll be shinin' like we're gold
Yeah, won't we? Won't we?
Mm, someday, down the line
Before we both run out of time, you're gonna see
That someday, we'll be all that we need

Genius Annotation

“Someday” is the sixth single of OneRepublic’s fifth studio album Human and touches on the theme of community and cherishing the moments spent with your loved ones.

In contrast to the theme in “Run”, the singer expresses his desire in wanting more in life in order to fill the empty void in his heart yet to no avail. However, his friends and loved ones tell him that their relationship with him is more valuable than anything he can ever obtain or achieve. He may not realize it now, but as he gets older, he’ll begin to understand in wisdom.

OneRepublic has covered this theme before but from different angles such as accountability (“Rescue Me”) and loneliness (“Connection”). However, this time, it’s as if the singer has hit a wall but thankfully, there are people to comfort him.

In connection with the album name, community is an integral part of being human. Having people you can depend on and spend time with can be the difference between a miserable life and a fulfilling one. No one can take on life by him/herself because no matter how hard you try, it will always lead you back to those around you.

How was this song teased prior to release?
Genius Answer

Back in March 20, 2020, Ryan and producer Tyler Spry teased multiple snippets from the album during an Instagram livestream. One of these snippets is, of course, “Someday.”

Interestingly, the sound of the song is noticeably different from the current, official version (along with the chorus having a different lyric at the end). According to Ryan during the YouTube Premium Afterparty of the release of the music video, the song went through many changes since 2020 which eventually evolved into the more laid-back vibe of the song we have today.
