Trap Door Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You say you’re a minute from the deep end
Then cut cold the courtesy, it's sink or swim now
And your body’s aching for a breath, I’ll give it to you
With a trap door to take care of all of them

[Chorus]
Come away, come away now
You won’t stand from afar
When you hear me saying
Come away, come away now
Because you’re too close for me to call

[Verse 2]
I've seen the foolish shame the wise
You just kept quiet with his own surprises
And your Trojan horse is big enough to save them all
And you’re not a foolish one at all

[Chorus]
Come away, come away now
You won’t stand from afar
When you hear me saying
Come away, come away now
Because you’re too close for me to call
[Bridge]
Lost to found, do you know
You’re the victim of
Kick-slide your pose, let it go
You don’t need them
Only flesh, blood, and bones
We’re the same, you and I
Far too young to die

[Chorus]
Come away, come away now
You won’t stand from afar
When you hear me saying
Come away, come away now
Because you’re too close

[Outro]
Come away

About

Genius Annotation

This song is called “Trapt Door” on their 2007 album (Dreaming Out Loud) and “Trap Door” on the 2009 album. (Waking Up.) Both are bonus releases, and both are the same song.

Ryan Tedder often approaches songwriting from the perspective of being in a position to offer advice or help to the one he’s speaking with. Songs like “All Fall Down,” “Say (All I Need),” “Someone To Save You,” and “Something’s Not Right Here” fall into this category – coincidentally, these are all from the Dreaming Out Loud album. This song also is in this group, as Ryan is offering his listener a break from her false friends and overcomplicated relationships.

The idea of a trap door is that of an escape route, a secret exit from difficulty that leads to another place.
The Trojan horse draws from the ancient Greek myth of Helen of Troy; after a long and unsuccessful war, the invading army pretended to leave, but they were really hidden inside a giant wooden horse which was left behind. When the townspeople brought the horse within the walls of the city, they unwittingly brought in the enemy soldiers inside it.
The modern definition of a Trojan horse is “ any trick or stratagem that causes a target to invite a foe into a securely protected bastion or place.” (Wikipedia)
