Genius Annotation

“California Halo Blue” was released alongside “Drive” as the second singles promoting Awolnation’s fourth album. The song approaches the loss of Aaron’s beloved Malibu studio in the 2018 Woolsey Fire head on. The song makes use of alien-like synth sounds alongside electric guitar and drums. The vocals and lyrics of the song take of a somber tone reaching a particularly wistful and mourning peak in the chorus and outro.

According to Bruno, “California halo blue” refers to his thinking during the fires, saying:

I kind of had this hopeful fantasy in my head visualizing there being a halo around California made of water, and that it could put out the fires.

Genius Answer

I was lucky enough to have four incredible women sing on the song that also sang for John Williams on some of the Star Wars movies. You can hear them in the distance on the chorus, singing some notes that are so high it’s unimaginable. I originally wanted to get children to sing on the song, for an innocent sadness, but those women were too good to be true. – Aaron Bruno
