The Best Lyrics

[Intro]
I just wanna be the best
I just wanna be the best
I just wanna be the best

[Verse 1]
I'm hardly perfect
I'm barely good
Just shy of greatness, ah-ah
I'm heavy metal
And hollow wood
Just shy of patience, ah-ah

[Chorus]
Me, I wanna walk a little bit taller, oh
Me, I wanna feel a little bit stronger, oh
Me, I wanna think a little bit smarter
Said I just wanna be the best
Me, I wanna walk a little bit taller, oh
Me, I wanna feel a little bit stronger, oh
Me, I wanna think a little bit smarter
Said I just wanna be the best

[Post-Chorus]
I just wanna be the best
I just wanna be the best
[Verse 2]
Oh, doctor, doctor
I have no clue
Of modern beauty, ah-ah
So fix my face up
With diet glue
And science fiction, ah-ah

[Chorus]
Me, I wanna walk a little bit taller, oh
Me, I wanna feel a little bit stronger, oh
Me, I wanna think a little bit smarter
Said I just wanna be the best
Me, I wanna walk a little bit taller, oh
Me, I wanna feel a little bit stronger, oh
Me, I wanna think a little bit smarter
Said I just wanna be the best

[Post-Chorus]
I just wanna be the best
I just wanna be the best

[Chorus]
Me, I wanna walk a little bit taller, oh
Me, I wanna feel a little bit stronger, oh
Me, I wanna think a little bit smarter
Said I just wanna be the best
Me, I wanna walk a little bit taller, oh
Me, I wanna feel a little bit stronger, oh
Me, I wanna think a little bit smarter
Said I just wanna be the best
[Post-Chorus]
I just wanna be the best
I just wanna be the best
I just wanna be the best
I just wanna be the best

[Outro]
(Yeah)

Genius Annotation

“The Best” marks the first release from AWOLNATION, aside from reworks, since their previous album, Here Come The Runts. It also is the first release following the destruction of Aaron Bruno’s studio in the Woolsey wildfires of late 2018.

The song features a somewhat dark and driving guitar rhythm, reminiscent of the Here Come The Runts era, while at the same time incorporating electronic touches similar to that of the Run or Megalithic Symphony eras. On that point, Aaron has hinted on Instagram that the next era may involve the “Spaceman” era of his first EP and Megalithic Symphony.

Lyrically, the song focuses on insecurity and the desire to feel more confident. The first verse suggests this desire may be never-ending, he is always “just shy of greatness” and the chorus describes his need to be “the best.” Aaron has talked about insecurity in his appearance before in “People” where he sang:

Well I lost my pride
With this body of mine

A snippet of the song was used as part of a marketing campaign with the MLB for the 2019 World Series but the tweet was later taken down.

In March 2020, “The Best” became Awolnation’s sixth top 5 hit on the Alternative Songs Chart.

The band released a video explaining the meaning of the song a week after it’s release, with Aaron saying:

The first song on the record is called “The Best.” I came to the realization that I’ll never be the best at anything so I thought I’d write a song about it. But also hope that it would motivate people. It’s always fun to aspire to be the best of something even though it’s in fact impossible. And especially in today’s day and age of competing to see who can get the most likes, have the most followers, and sort of this kind of superficial world we’re living in. Although it’s probably been this way since the beginning of time, it seems a lot more evident and there’s more proof of it with social media. So, this song, while I can see a lot of people being inspired to train harder and get more radical in that sort of way. And now that this song is out I’ve had a lot of time to think about how to explain the messaging of the song and its actual meaning and I realized that, simply put, it’s about finding and discovering the best version of yourself.

It occurred to me that when I was starting to come up with the concept of the song, the melody, the blueprint of it rhythmically, all that, that I’m hard on myself. I’m my own worst critic. It’s unhealthy how much pressure we put on ourselves. “The Best” is the opposite of the “Eye of the Tiger” or the Rocky theme. It’s a self-deprecating, sad song when I hear it. But if it inspires people to push a little harder, that’s awesome. – Aaron Bruno
