The DJ Is Crying For Help Lyrics

[Verse 1: Jack Met]
Everyone's laughin' at me
But not like they used to
The room's spinnin' all around me
But not like I'm used to

[Pre-Chorus: Jack Met]
Hired, hired, can I get hired?
I got no skills except gettin' high
I'm tryin', tryin', I can start Friday
You've wasted your life, but thanks for applying

[Chorus: Jack Met]
Hey now, hold up, we were fun as hell
I'm all grown up, but you couldn't tell
Now I don't know what to do with myself
(Da-da-da-da-da-da-da)
You got older 'cause you're good at life
I'm all seventeen at thirty-five
Now I don't know if there's anything else
The DJ is cryin' for help

[Post-Chorus: Jack Met, Marten Lieberman, Andy Sobelson, Alba Avoricani, Cat Capps, Rob Piccione, Ariel Gandler, Ezra Donellan, Dane Hagen & Chris Berry]
The DJ is cryin' for help
Don't know what to do with myself
Hey now, hold up, we were fun as hell
I'm all grown up but you couldn't tell
Now I don't know what to do with myself
The DJ is cryin' for help

[Verse 2: Jack Met]
Everyone's trippin' on pills
But now they're prescribed too
And everyone's stackin' their bills
But not 'cause they like to

[Pre-Chorus: Jack Met]
Oh, hired, hired, can I get hired?
Yeah, I fucked up, but I did it my way
I'm tryin', tryin', I can start Friday
Gettin' a life's a little like dyin'

[Chorus: Jack Met]
Hey now, hold up, we were fun as hell
I'm all grown up, but you couldn't tell
Now I don't know what to do with myself
(Da-da-da-da-da-da-da)
You got older 'cause you're good at life
I'm all seventeen at thirty-five
Now I don't know if there's anything else
The DJ is cryin' for help

[Post-Chorus: Jack Met, Marten Lieberman, Andy Sobelson, Alba Avoricani, Cat Capps, Rob Piccione, Ariel Gandler, Ezra Donellan, Dane Hagen & Chris Berry, All]
Don't leave me out
The DJ is cryin' for help
Don't leave me out
Don't know what to do with myself
Hey now, hold up, we were fun as hell
I'm all grown up, but you couldn't tell
Now I don't know what to do with myself

The DJ is cryin' for help
You got older 'cause you're good at life (Don't leave me out)
I'm all seventeen at thirty-five
Now I don't know if there's anything else
The DJ is cryin' for help
[Bridge: Jack Met]
And now I'm all (I'm all) alone (Alone)
Waitin' for the beat to drop
Be kind to me, be kind and wait it out
And now I'm all (I'm all) alone (Alone)
Waitin' 'til the party starts
Be kind to me, be kind and wait it out

[Outro: Jack Met]
And now I'm all alone
Waitin' 'til the party starts

About

Genius Annotation

“The DJ Is Crying For Help” is the second promotional single from AJR’s fifth studio album, following “I Won’t.” Continuing in their traditional coming-of-age storytelling, this song touches on experiences on the other side of childhood now that they are adults, more so than previous songs. With songs like “Don’t Throw Out My Legos” being about transitioning between childhood and adulthood, “The DJ Is Crying For Help” is more in line with “3 O-Clock Things,” offering a retrospective look at life now that they have some experience. They start to leave the party life and get a taste of what real life is like.

In his livestream breakdown of OK ORCHESTRA on November 22, 2022, Ryan shared the idea for the song started with Jack and that line: “The DJ is crying for help.” The DJ represents the protagonist of the story more so than a literal DJ in that the person who seems happiest and makes other people happy also has sad experiences. Parties give people the opportunity to forget the struggles of their lives. At some point, people need to grow up, find purpose and struggle to achieve it.

While the sounds of “The DJ Is Crying For Help” feel like an AJR song, they are structured in a way that is unconventional to their other songs. Most of them have a level of optimism that give them a party song-type feeling, and there are elements of that here as well, but “The DJ Is Crying For Help” starts off slow and builds up toward an end that is more somber, akin to their sleeper hit, “The Good Part.” This creative decision to have a happy/sad feeling helps ground the song in reality in the same way the DJ is themself.

How was the song teased?
Genius Answer

AJR is notorious for teasing songs, mostly because experimenting with sounds excites themselves just as much as new music does for their fans. However, they faced some backlash after over-teasing their previous single, “I Won’t,” for so long before its eventual release. As part of an Instagram Story Q&A on October 25, 2022, Ryan promised they learned their lesson.

The first tease of the song came on August 21, 2022, when Jack shared a video to Twitter of him and Ryan playing a snippet of a song they were currently working on while on the international leg of THE OK ORCHESTRA TOUR. On August 30, they shared a follow-up video to Twitter with a snippet that started just before the last one. They later shared the snippet as a TikTok audio and used it in a few videos (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), hoping to promote the song’s eventual release.

November 13 brought the single’s title, artwork and release date. A couple days later, on November 15, a YouTube Short provided yet another snippet paired with some behind-the-scenes content from the music video before the song’s full release later that week.

Amidst all this, at the end of September, AJR updated the link in their Instagram profile to a pre-save link for the song.

Is there any behind-the-scenes content for the music video?
Genius Answer

While a full behind-the-scenes video has not been released, the band has shared some clips from the shooting of the music video for “The DJ Is Crying For Help.”

The first was shared via Twitter and Instagram on November 15, 2022, three days before the song’s and accompanying music video’s release to help promote them both.

The video shows frontman and brother Jack running around the Escultura “Tierra de México en Tierra de Francia,” or the sculpture “Land of Mexico in Land of France,” for Austin Roa, AJR’s touring photographer and emerging videographer. It acts as a sort of before-and-after video showing the simple but creative ideas AJR use in their music videos and how they are achieved.

A similar video was shared via Twitter and Instagram on November 19, the day after the song and music video’s release.

It is another video showing Jack and Austin recording a running gimbal shot, although brother and producer Ryan is also helping by singing along with the song to cue Jack and running alongside Austin to make sure he doesn’t run into anything he can’t see while he runs backwards.

Both videos show the limited budget the music video had, similar to most of their other videos. While they may be shooting at the exotic location that is Paris, France, it is only because they were already touring there the weekend of October 9 for the international leg of THE OK ORCHESTRA TOUR. Additionally, rather than having a full video crew to have a typical multi-day shoot, they instead use natural light and shoot in their free time during the day before they perform at night. The special effects are similar to the ones done for the music video for the band’s previous single, “I Won’t,” and the music videos for the “Overture” series in that they rely heavily on the footage that is captured rather than created visuals that often require a larger team and more time to produce, both of which are expensive.
