This song was first inadvertently teased during a series of technical difficulties for the “Breaking down the production of The DJ Is Crying for help and Joe” livestream on November 22, 2022. It was officially teased on August 15, 2023 with the caption “Teasing another one. The album is ready.” and later on September 3 with the caption “I would give anything to not give a shit, but I do.”
On September 8, the band released a guessing game for the tracklist of The Maybe Man, effectively confirming the song’s title would be “Touchy Feely Fool.”
On September 22, the band sent a link to a clip of the first verse and pre-chorus to fans who were signed up for their text list. The full song was played for the first time in public during the AJR Rec Room event on November 2.

The first instance of the song came from a series of technical difficulties for the “Breaking down the production of The DJ Is Crying For Help and Joe” livestream on November 22, 2022 gave fleet-footed fans the opportunity to take screenshots (1, 2, 3, 4) from Ryan’s recently opened files and folders, some which included unreleased and unannounced songs and projects.

Following the unfortunate passing of the Met brothers' father, Gary Met, on July 3, the band took a brief social media hiatus and withdrew from concert appearances. A month later, they returned to social media and concerts. It wasn’t long before they started teasing new music again.
