OKAY OKAY Lyrics

[Intro]
Da-da, da-da-da-da, da-da
Da-da,  da-da-da-da, da
Da-da,  da-da-da-da, da-da
Da-da, da-da-da-da (Okay)

[Verse 1]
My best friend said to me, "I know just what we need
A  song of yours that we could feel ourselves to"
I  said it'd be a test 'cause you know I'm always stressed
Come to think of it, I guess I've never cared to

[Pre-Chorus]
She  said, "You won't know if you never commit"
So here's me convincing myself I'm the shit

[Chorus]
I'm a million trick pony
The number one and only
On  a scale of 1 to 10, I'm at 11
Okay, okay
Turn pain into a paycheck
Should see me in a sundress
I do it all with ease, I should give lessons
Okay, okay, okay

[Verse 2]
Maybe if I write it down, I'll make it real somehow
'Cause everyone's allowed to feel amazing

[Pre-Chorus]
And I'll never know if I never commit
So here's me convincing myself I'm the shit

[Chorus]
I'm a million trick pony
The number one and only
On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm at 11
Okay, okay
Turn pain into a paycheck
Should see me in a sundress
I do it all with ease, I should give lessons
Okay, okay, okay

[Bridge]
Fake it until I make it ring true
One day, I'ma be better at feelin' cool, yeah
Fake it until I make it ring true, ayy
One day, I'ma be better at feelin' like a

[Chorus]
Million trick pony
The number one and only
On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm at 11
Okay, okay
Turn pain into a paycheck
Should see me in a sundress
I do it all with ease, I should give lessons
Okay, okay, okay

About

Genius Annotation

On “OKAY OKAY,” Alessia Cara steps away from her usual subject matter of adolescence and aspects of love, in order to have a good ole self-empowerment song.

Similarly to her 2017 hit song “Scars to Your Beautiful,” which peaked at the Top 10 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the theme of accepting yourself is evident throughout. However, “OKAY OKAY” takes a more braggadocious route.

In an article by Rolling Stone, they stated

The track takes the standard “loving yourself” theme and gases it up to something refreshingly funky, with Cara exhibiting no shame or modesty over her accomplishments.

“OKAY OKAY” is the third single, and fourth track, off of the This Summer – EP.

What did Alessia Cara say about "OKAY OKAY"?
Genius Answer

In her interview at the Zach Sang Show, Alessia Cara has explained that this song about empowering herself is, in contrast to earlier song with the same topic, less emotional and more to have fun:

So this song is like super sarcastic but it’s also my way of trying to convince myself that I’m really cool and the best. And I feel like everybody is supposed to feel like they’re the best sometimes. So that’s kinda what I was trying to do. It’s definitely not a serious song […] and probably the most light song I’ve ever made.

What inspired this song?
Genius Answer

Alessia explained that such a different mood in one of her songs was requested by her best friend:

She calls it a “cocky song.” Where it’s like, “You gotta write a song which we can just dance to and feel ourselves and […] where you tell yourself how cool you are and how great you are!”

Coincidentally, her producer Jon Levine played her a more fun beat as she entered the studio.

[It] sounded […] really cool and it felt super light. And I didn’t really think I could write anything emotional over it particularly. So I was like, “You know what? Today is the day, I'ma write Olivia’s cocky song for her.”
