Funny Business Lyrics

[Intro]
No funny business
No funny business

[Verse 1]
Trust me, trust me when I say that I was innocent
Trust me, he'd only stay 'cause we were just listenin'
Yeah, we were just listenin'

[Pre-Chorus]
And I know what you think
I know you're scared I'll find someone else
And I know what you think
That I'll be unfaithful and it'll be unfair
And you will be torn in two
Well I've got some news for you

[Chorus]
I don't break hearts, I don't do funny business
I just ride cars and watch them get hung up in it
I don't break hearts, I don't do funny business
I just ride in cars and watch them get hung up in it

[Post-Chorus]
Watch them get hung up in it
Watch them get hung up in it
[Verse 2]
Trust me, my word is good and I swear no one else is
Trust me, I got the loyalty, I've learned my lessons
Yeah, I've learned my lessons

[Pre-Chorus]
And I know what you think
I know you're scared I'll find someone else
And I know what you think
That I'll be unfaithful and it'll be unfair
And you will be torn in two
Well I've got some news for you

[Chorus]
I don't break hearts, I don't do funny business
I just ride cars and watch them get hung up in it
I don't break hearts, I don't do funny business
I just ride in cars and watch them get hung up in it

[Bridge]
If you think about it, will the lightning strike?
If you think about it, hope you'll realize
If you think about it, will the lightning strike?
If you think about it, hope you'll realize

[Chorus]
I don't play cards, I don't do funny business
I just ride cars and watch them get hung up in it
I don't break hearts, I don't do funny business
I just ride in cars and watch them get hung up in it
[Post-Chorus]
Watch them get hung up in it
Watch them get hung up in it
Watch them get hung up in it

[Chorus]
I don't break hearts, I don't do funny business
I just ride cars and watch them get hung up in it
I don't break hearts, I don't do funny business
I just ride in cars and watch them get hung up in it

Genius Annotation

“Funny Business” was released on November 29, 2018, in advance of Alice Merton’s debut solo album, MINT. It is the second official single from the album. In a November 27 tweet, she announced that in two days she’d be releasing a new song:

The song continues Merton’s theme of confessional alternative pop songs. The lyrics mock the assumption that singers on tour are highly promiscuous and incapable of being in a committed relationship. Merton elaborated in an interview with Nylon on the relationship that inspired her to write the song:

I was in a relationship where there was trust […] but there wasn’t at the same time… a lot of people think that, when you’re on tour, you’re just having sex with lots of different people every night and living this crazy lifestyle. It’s really not like that. I’m living on a bus with nine guys.

Merton premiered the song on Nylon on November 29, 2018, two years after she had premiered her breakthrough hit, “No Roots,” on their site. In a tweet, she wrote on her decision to premiere the song on that website.

The song’s music video, which Merton directed herself, was premiered on January 9, 2019, on women’s blog Refinery29.

Genius Answer

Merton told Refinery29 that

I wrote the treatment and directed the video. We shot the whole video in Berlin. I love trying to take the atmosphere of Berlin and put it into videos. I wanted to have a little bit of the dreary atmosphere. Even the apartment, it’s very typical with the beer bottles lying around and a mattress on the floor. I met a dancer, Nikita, from our last video whose aura I loved, as well as his personality and how he moved. He hadn’t done any acting before, but I loved his dance moves and goofy nature. I didn’t hire a choreographer, I asked him to think of three routines he could do for the verse and the chorus and the rest I ad-libbed with him. We experimented and saw what looked cool in different parts of Berlin that I had scouted with my cameraman.
