Very Online Guy Lyrics
He's a very online guy
He likes to hit reply
He's incredibly vigilant
Hair with the feathered wings
He likes to pull the strings
It's incredibly visible
[Pre-Chorus]
We all know everything that he says and does
Leave your location on and just follow the buzz
[Chorus]
He's only one filter away
He's only one follow, one filter away
[Verse 2]
He's a very online guy
He types his cool replies
He's incredibly animal
Front of the wеdding trains
He laps up all domains
And he loves a patio
[Chorus]
Hе's only one flicker away
He's only one photo, one filter away
Like a thinning wave, what was it supposed to be?
The truth is I'm afraid of sudden change
But when you're close to me, does anyone notice?
Life disintegrates, what was it supposed to be?
The truth is I'm afraid to turn away
But when you're ghosting me, does anyone notice?
[Chorus]
He's only one filter away
He's only one photo, one flicker away
He's only one photo, one follow, one filter away
[Outro]
He's a very online guy
About
This is a song about the “reply guy (very online guy)” culture. These “reply guys” reply to almost everything people post on social media, in a tired pattern of pranks, corrections, unsolicited advice and more. These overconfident people pester the internet until they get a response to gain attention.
With the epidemic, these reply guys spend more time online and much of this communication eventually degenerates into meaninglessness.

It’s interesting to see where people have taken their thoughts based on the song “Very Online Guy,” but really it’s not supposed to be much of a commentary on the internet or even people’s behavior. I know that’s played out, and I don’t really want to judge or impose my views on anyone on how they live their lives. But I like the idea of this dreamboat thriving online, needing everyone to know what’s cool and what’s new. It develops into this longing opus of, “If I alter myself in a specific way, will I appeal to them then?” And just the dialogue of that back and forth.

I’m really glad that the song made it on because it’s just such a strange little opus. It just started out as me humming a joke, and Alec and I just thought it was so hilarious that we just chased it down for a few hours, and it became this distorted love song.
