Genius Annotation

Working on DMX’s final album Exodus, Swizz Beatz—in collaboration with X himself—had a vision for the Dark Man’s return: “I didn’t want the album just to be artists from when X first came out,” Swizz tells Apple Music. “I wanted it—and he wanted it—to be energy from today.” What that meant for “Money Money Money” initially was a guest spot from another artist who left us too soon. “I actually made the beat for Pop Smoke,” Swizz says. “Pop Smoke was like, ‘I want something that sound like X.’ And then I think by mistake or whatever, the verses got out, and they was put on different songs, so we had to change it at the last minute.” That change became the addition of Moneybagg Yo, an artist Swizz says he’s recently become a fan of. “The song is called ‘Money Money Money,’ so I felt like Moneybagg Yo was perfect for it,” he says. “And I actually like him as an artist.” Listen to “Money Money Money” on Rap Life, the playlist at the forefront of hip-hop culture today, and if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
