About
“Pied Piper” is BTS’s interpretation of the German folktale “Pied Piper of Hamelin.”
BTS depicts themselves as the piper with his flute while their fandom represents the innocent children being lured and driven to death.
The piper initially set out to help the city with their rat infestation (like BTS contributes to diversity in global music acts), but later in the story, the children are eventually lured by the piper to their deaths. This is likened to BTS fans' case as their gradual fanaticism and consumerism for the group leading to a purposeless life, a state similar to death.

When I wrote the rap part to “Pied Piper” we assigned a role to each member. My role was to express our gratitude for our fans, but in a unique way, so I was a little worried. I was afraid it might offend some fans. I’m not saying that’s natural. My friends, the friends of my friends, and my friends and relatives, or my sister’s friends, they all told me. They [BTS' fans, ARMYs] interpret the meaning behind our music videos. They struggle to get a ticket for our concert. They always tell me those things in letters. How they express how much they love us. I wanted to express our gratitude in a unique way. I wrote also the lyrics for the chorus and hook parts. While I was doing it, I wondered if it would be okay. It was a bit… dangerous. The vocalists in our group really pulled it off—thank you! “Pied Piper” is a fun song. I got to express my appreciation for our fans once again.
